Virgin Atlantic cancels order for 6 A380s

Wed Mar 07, 2018 5:15 pm

The latest Airbus O&D spreadsheet shows that VS cancelled its 6 A380 orders in February

Wonder if either the depositum is lost or goes towards other Airbus aircraft?

Well at least we have some closure on it. Not a surprise at all, but by hanging onto the order, we continued to have speculation about what they were going to do with it down the road. One less thread to read in the future I guess. :-)

It took them ironing out the details on where those down payments will be used....future order of A350's or A330 NEO's like partner DELTA.....interesting times ahead

Finally. This order was a zombie waiting to be shot in the head.
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.

Not really - nobody really believed VA were ever going to take these. They were a vanity order.

We have multiple threads where people absolutely expected them to take delivery. Lately? not so much.

It seems good to me, the A380 was very big for its operations, a fleet of B787 and A350 is perfect for Virgin Atlantic

The A380 would of worked for VS back in the days of Bermuda II... however once LHR was opened up the order was dead.... Just look how LHR capacity has dropped since Bermuda II was scrapped.... 744 and 346 replaced with smaller right sized 787/330's.

By now any deposits VS made on those frames was transferred to the other Airbus product they have ordered (A330 and A350).

This was really just a house-keeping move to formally retire an order that was never going to be filled and I am guessing it was driven by some financial reporting / accounting requirement on either VS' or Airbus' end.

One of the last 'soft' contracts to go, further complicated by post initial order delays and changes. Subject to a confidentiality agreement, so we will never know. Suspect the transfer was less than 100 cents in the dollar.

All eyes now on QF. Another 'soft' contract, further changed over the years.

Agree. At the time I was surprised they ordered them and as the time went on they became less and less likely to see VS livery.

When EK firms up their 16 options, we'll probably see a cancellation of the Amedeo A380 'order', or the UFO order (formerly Hong Kong Airlines).

Deposits will be shifted to the A300neo, the aircraft they've wanted all along, but never realized till they consulted a.net.

Whilst this was essentially a forgone conclusion, and to be expected, a bit of me is admittedly a little sad - flying with VS is often a great experience.

Presumably we can now expect Richie Branson to announce that he cannot afford the planes ordered with the same glamorous fanfare he used some years back when he ordered the planes

Well, we all get older and tend to forget things, Alzheimer may be an issue here .... :rotfl:

What a completely ridiculous comment.

The A380 story is a long, long way from being over yet. I know the A380 is the central catalyst for a lot of prejudiced transatlantic opinion; but from a passenger perspective; IMO; the A380 is the best travelling experience in the skies.

IMO is right

I think the way an airline configures an aircraft more than the aircraft itself determines the experience

In Y many would say the 767 has best experience
In J plenty of great configurations across 787, 777, 333, 350 etc.
In F...I'll give you thay 380 have best suites/Apartments, but a very small percentage of Flyers see this

I'm guessing the reason Airbus even mentioned the possibility of canceling the A380 is that it's selling like hotcakes for airlines all over the world, right?

The experience you get as a traveler:
1. Does not outweigh the fact that the only airline that's truly interested in the A380 (or at least ordering new units) is EK
2. Has nothing to do with the lack of orders after all airlines received their units.

Even if they kill A380 today, it would not be a cancellation. A cancellation of an aircraft development program would mean tge aircraft is nit going to be developed which clearly isn't the case here.

Yes, but somehow I feel the QF order won't disappear that soon. Perhaps when QF selects the A359 for their ULH operations. Or when Schulz decides to do some more housekeeping in Airbus' orderbook, as KarelXWB rightly points out ;)

Guess me and WW have something in common (we want something) and Tesla and Airbus also have something in common (they're not getting our business).

As much as I respect SRB this was one big publicity stunt at the time.

My money is on G-VMAP "Mama Cass" for the first one (or would have been).

Maybe they can use it on one of the extra A35K that VS apparently want, and are negotiating for.

Does anyone else feel bad for the A380 project? Such a marvelous bird...

Honestly the A380 program was dead from the start! the only airline that's able to make it work is EK.

That's absolutely not true. For destinations where you can sell lots of business seats, they work great. Every time I flew in or out of JNB on an A380 (be it BA or LH), J tickets were hard to get (even weeks in advance sometimes) and not exactly cheap.
It's also a great experience and a very comfortable ride (especially compared to a 777): it's silent, stable and cabin temperature is just fine. Most of my colleagues would generally pick an airline that has an A380 on that route over anything else.

I remember the day the A380 took to the air back in 2005, SRB on the BBC News live at Toulouse pointing at an under construction model saying "that's mine there". I had a feeling even then that wasn't going to be the case. A pity really, they would have looked great in VS colours, despite the failing business case.

I hope they convert these cancellations into the A350-1000. Would work well to replace some of their A346.

I know from an A380 engineer from Hamburg who already told me 3 years ago that this order will never come. So no one on the A380 Team worked on it.
