Canada's WestJet ordered to change hiring practices for new no-frills carrier

"Canada's WestJet Airlines must change its hiring strategy for the company's new bargain carrier, Swoop, an Air Line Pilots Association executive said on Tuesday, citing a recent Canadian labor board order."

"The country's second-largest carrier can no longer recruit its pilots through two-year leaves of absence to fly for Swoop and will have to rescind any existing offers, Rob McFadyen, chairman of WestJet’s ALPA master executive council, said in a telephone interview."

"ALPA, which is negotiating its first contract with Calgary-based WestJet, said the carrier was trying to bypass the union by luring its own pilots to fly for Swoop under different working conditions."

Doesn't Swoop have it's own separate AOC, or is the AOC being shared with Westjet

It's a separate AOC, but they're ultimately all paid by the same parent company.

I wonder how the Westjetters in YXX / YEG / YWG / YHM / YHZ will feel when the flights they used to work have now been contracted out to a lower cost ground handler. Kind of a slap in the face especially considering these are all senior WS bases.

Perhaps another seed for other WS departments to seek the union road for future potential protection.

An example of this already happened with YVR/YYC/YEG/YWG/YYZ Air Supply being contracted out to Gate Gourmet.

Similar but in this case the flights will still be owned and operated by the parent company.

Would have been a little more painful I'm sure had WS created a separate in house, lower cost commissary division and awarded it the contract.
