Changes For United - Sth. Pacific Flts?

Sun Mar 03, 2002 8:56 pm

Hey there, can anyone confirm for me that United are pulling both their Melbourne services out & just flying to Sydney?

I heard the other day that whilst UA do make good money ex Melbourne, they are restricted by payload, as they prefer to carry more freight - less pax, and apparently Qantas flying non-stop to LAX has really hurt them, along with the 9-11 aftermath? Does this also mean that UA will drop Auckland as well?

Appreciate your replies!

afaik, they will continue to operate LAX-AKL daily and nonstop, however, they´re switching to 772 aircraft on that route.
don´t know about MEL, though.

cheers

United themselves flew LAX-MEL nonstop at one point if memory serves me. Can someone confirm this...I seem to remember UA flying LAX-MEL nonstop at one time. I believe UA may have even announced it first, followed by a prompt Qantas response that they too would fly the route.

Yes, I have been on that flight 6 times (business). 14 hours 55 minutes LAX to MEL.

From what I understand, the AKL-MEL tag will be dropped when UA convert to 772 equipment on the LAX-AKL segment. The SYD-MEL tag on it's SFO-SYD services is remaining to uplift it's MEL pax. As we all know, in this bizz today's truth is tomorrow's past rumour.
Cheers.
