It's probably more efficient to use dedicated wide bodied freighters for large freight that can't fit in the cargo holds of passenger aircraft. When the combi 747's were new, there were very few cargo 747's in service. It made sense to have wide bodied combis to serve routes that regularly had demand for oversized freight that needed to go on the main deck. The 787 can carry as much cargo and passengers as a 747 combi, so long as the freight can fit in the cargo hold.

As an aside, I think it would be nice gesture for KLM to name a plane "City of Houston" to commemorate the long-time service. Just my two cents ;-)

Thanks. Only thing missing is cargo history!

Had to have been a huge deal at the time. Only U.S. interior city served transatlantic with a turboprop other than ORD and DTW? First transatlantic service to the southern U.S.? KLM's second U.S. city?

DC-8 largest aircraft to serve HOU in regularly scheduled service? (Which variant?)

Somewhere between 1969 and the early 1970s AF started IAH, becoming the second TATL carrier.

Missing here were the several spurts of 2x service on A330-200. IIRC sometimes year-round, sometimes summer seasonal, fizzled out at 2x.

789 to be a 26-seat/day (~10%) upgauge from 747 combi.

5 less business.

12 more premium economy.

19 more economy.

It's the end of an era. Seeing a KLM 744 fly over my house and elementary/middle/high school always made my day.

Gotta pour one out for the homies now.

Amen. My first 747 flight was on a KLM bird out of IAH in the late 80's. Great service and great airplane.

It would be nice, but I am not holding my breath. If LA, Chicago or NYC do not see their names gracing one their ‘47s’, I doubt that they will make an exception for ol H-Town.

Oh Lord, the only thing I can't stand about my hometown is the constant "put upon" attitude.

I suppose I will take that, though, over cities that think they're the center of the universe.

They also use to have seasonal 2 times a day 747 flights. 1 during the day 1 during the evening. Then they use to have the 737 privitair flight.

I'm saddened. I didn't know this change was coming. For years I've seen the blue whales occasionally fly high overhead. Also seen them in IAH too. So beautiful. Was even better when two came by in one day.

Was lucky enough to fly the KLM 747 twice AMS-IAH. KLM is an excellent carrier and the combi was a super comfortable plane in all cabins. It will be missed at IAH.

I flew IAH- AMS on a 744 in 1994 I think. It is the end of an era. The 744 will be missed. I also flew the 744 on the BA LHR-IAH route.
