Aviation ambitions of interior West China: XIY, KMG, CKG, CTU target world-class airports with rwys ≥4, pax ≥100 million

According to this most recent Chinese report 成渝西昆机场大扩建 中国四座流量亿级航空城市崛起Massive airport projects in Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an and Kunming, interior cities Xi’an, Kunming, Chongqing, Chengdu in West China are now having big aviation ambitions, eyeing world-class airport infrastructure projects, in a massive move to build or expand

Xi’an, capital of northwestern Shaanxi Province, has put in place official plans to build 2 new rwys and a new terminal with an area of 700,000 sq meters, which upon completion would uplift its Xianyang International Airport/XIY to a 110-120 million pax capacity, and should even be able to handle 130-150 million pax with future technological advancement.

Similarly, Kunming, capital of southwestern Yunnan Province, also got ready its own official plans to build 2 new rwys for expansion of its Changshui International Airport/KMG, which would enable the airport to have a pax throughput of 120 million by 2030

While current 2-rwy XIY and KMG both are seeking to bolster capacity via massive expansion projects, their neighboring municipality Chongqing has taken a different approach by planning a 2nd new airport. Local municipal authorities issued a public notice just in April to solicit bids from firms and organizations for the planning of a 2nd commercial airport, marking a first official step towards a multi-airport system. The current Jiangbei International Airport/CKG has 3 rwys and 3 terminals, handling approx 40 million pax in 2017

More impressively, Chengdu, capital of southwestern Sichuan Province, has already undertaken the construction of a grand new Tianfu International Airport as early as 2016, which is scheduled to open in 2020, with 3 rwys for 1st phase and another 3 rwys for the long-term, featuring a terminal of 1.26 million sq meters in area. With the current Shuangliu International Airport/CTU and the new Tianfu International Airport, Chengdu would have an aviation market of a forecast 150 million pax per annum

This might sound a bit crazy, but upon second thoughts, should make good sense

Any observations or thoughts?

It is worth mentioning that these 4 cities, geographically landlocked and relatively far from China’s eastern coastal areas, are huge population centers in their respective administrative region where residents are numbered in tens of millions and cultural heritage/natural tourism resources are abundantly rich, creating favorable conditions and strong demand for air travel in connectivity with the rest of country and beyond, despite having access in general to China’s nationwide high-speed rail network

They could have included URC to as that airport is being expanded with 2 additional runways and a 4,3 million sq feet terminal building. It will handle 60-70 million before the end of 2020s.

Big thing in favor of this airport is that they are far enough away from the East Coast Mega Cities + Bejing that High-Speed rail no longer becomes competitive - high speed rail is really only good for trip up to 800-1000km

We often talk about the massive populations of Chinese cities being a factor, a bigger factor is actually the other 1.3 billion people living in China whom may want to visit.

I have heard people mention that, with flights in China being delayed rather often and rail price being relatively low when compared with other countries, even for journey close to 2000km, they can still attract numerous passengers (although air travel is still the more attractive option to many people and flights are indeed popular in this distance segment)

Sounds like a brilliant idea, really, it's not like the Chinese airspace isn't chock full already resulting in massive delays everywhere. On my last 7 Chinese domestic sectors the averagewas about 3,5 hours.

If this ever happens, and note that Chinese local governments love to come up with fancy ambitious ideas and projects which don't get realized, this will just completely clog up the Chinese airspace. I really don't see the Chinese air force giving up their control over the airspace any time soon.

Definitely insane, but then, I would say Central Gov't is really pushing for growth in the West due to the OBOR initiative. KMG is a very good gateway for SE Asia while XIY, being the historical starting point of Slik Road, try to become the start of the "21st century slik road" also. Yunnan, of course, got tons of tourism (The whole area is beautiful, although some places are getting too touristy nowaday), and the best way to get to some of those places are still through air (Lijiang, for example, is a pain to get to by ground).

On the other hand, are CKG and CTU still trying to outdo each other as usual? :rotfl: For me CTU is still the economic engine of Western China and the better tourist gateway anyway. But being Chongqing, not surprised that they want to extend their chaos into the airspace by building another airport :white:

It make complete sense to do it now that the labour cost is still relatively low in these parts of China. It is not that they are full at the moment at any of these airports today, but it is entirely possible they will in say 10-20 years time. To be fair, the airspace over these airports and the airways are nowhere as chaotic today as the airports in the East or South of China. CKG for example is probably the only airport in the entire Chongqing municipality that handles more than say 3mn passenger per annum.

Surprised URC is not mentioned as it could develop into a super hub due to its geographical location
