Toronto's New Airport

Wed Aug 25, 1999 6:53 am

Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International airport is going through a major facelift for the next couple of years and will be getting a brand new terminal (replacing both T1 and T2). I consider this to be a great accomplishment since the present airport will slowly be assimilated while it's still operating (no starting from scratch with a new plot of land). I was wondering if anyone knows any details about the design of this new terminal and where I can get any additional information about it. I would really be interested in seeing some design specs. I am looking forward to the expansion of YYZ and I wonder if the fiasco between Air Canada and Canadian will affect its design (probably not, though).

Any information or comments will be appreciated.

Hello
Yes YYZ is going throught a mayor upgrade with a new terminal, 2 new runways and an new infield cargo area. In 2015 it will be one hell of an airport.

Everything you wanted is on their website:

You would be looking for Airport Development Program. Under Scheduled Construction they have some nice 3D renderings on how the airport will look in 1, 2,3 and 5 years it takes a long time to load but it gives you a nice picture to look at. Browse around and you will learn lot.

It seems that the airport will all be connected to Terminal 3, and I can picture it to look a lot like the airport in Vancouver, with one end being a domestic side, and the other being international. (Correct me if I'm wrong...) I think this is a great idea, and just hope that they will add a viewing area, where you can have a great view of the airplanes.

I was just at the airport this past weekend, and they have begun building around the terminals.

As MIKEYYZ says, you should visit the airport's website listed in the message above, since it gives great information.

I don't think that the Air Canada/Canadian mess will change the layout too much.

It sure will be interesting to see how it turns out....

Thanks for the great web tip... I have been visiting www.gtaa.com for the longest time and they don't keep that site up to date. From the airport designs, it doesn't seem that the new terminal looks physically connected to T3 from above ground. Maybe there will be an underground tunnel or a shuttle between the two terminals. In addition, does anyone know how the planned Light Rapid Transit (LRT) will be involved? I am not quite clear on the website's explanation of that. Thanks again for pointing out the great website!

If you're looking at the 3D renderings, the new terminal is not conencted to T3 because it's not finished, you only see half of it. There's also supposed to be a big parking lot in the empty space below the New Ter. The new terminal will be finished in 2015 (I think) in the 3D pic you still see the old Terminal 2 (the thing on the left side of the page). it will be connected to T3 by a small walkway similar to the one at ORD between American and united terminals (i think).
On the LRT that's the first thing i heard of that. I probably should read that again.

About a year ago I e-mailed them for information and they sent me a huge package with brochures about the new terminals and ther master plan. Give it a shot! It is ALOT more than just a facelift  Good luck.
