I was thinking today that Boeing started a fashion on aviation, since they used, I THINK, the first ever 3 number code on a plane... 707. From there, Airbus, Fairchild and Embraer have also used them. Is this coincidence or manufacturers liked what Boeing did??
Why didn't McDonnell Douglas or others did so??

Actually Douglas was in the commercial aviation business before Boeing. True, Boeing had the 247, which really help started the industry along with the Ford Trimotor...Douglas had a plane called the Dolphin first. Fast forward to the jet age, Douglas merely continue the 'DC' series after the DC-7 to the DC-8. So really the Boeing 707 was a first for them. Hope this make some sort of sense. Regards.

As I recall, 707 was: 7(# of Boeing Division, as opposed to military, space, rotary, etc) 07 (product number from the division).
