What's the status of American's planned terminal improvements in MIA? Have they begun work yet?

Work began over a year ago with completion around 2005. It is going to take so long because they are building a brand new terminal over an old one that is still going to be in use, so it's a long and tedious process. The new terminal will bring American up to 330 daily mainline flights (from about 190 right now), plus American Eagle. It is called "American Airlines Gateway to the World" (or one of those cheesy "world" name things), and will be AA's main international gateway, with the main purpose of connecting America with Latin America and the Carribbean and visa versa, and trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific (NRT) flights to serve the O&D market and Latin American connections. New destinations will be in the plans. SDI, PUJ, MDE, and VLN are coming this year. Also being tossed around include the return of SJC and SEA, as well as MSP, PIT, MCI, LAS (those four might happen sooner than later). CMH, IND, AUS, SAN, YOW, BCN, BRU, FRA, and a few others. Those extra 140 flights will have to come from some place.

UA is the same. They serve LAX and SFO with 777s, plus JFK, DEN, IAD, ORD, MCO, and DCA in the US. In Latin America, CCS, GRU, GIG, SCL, and EZE. Roughly 25ish dailies. Double-daily to LAX re-starts 07Jun. New 14-gate terminal broke ground last January.

BA has been double-daily at MIA since 1992. They are double-daily 747-400 (4-Class) to Heathrow.
