First "new" route from BFL in years: DFW

Fri Jul 13, 2018 2:21 am

BFL will re-establish service to DFW through a federal grant, according to local news in Bakersfield (I believe the grant was posted elsewhere on these boards, but the destination not listed). This would be the first time the airport has had non-stop service to DFW since the 1990's, and the first time it has had service to Texas since UA pulled its RJ service to IAH in 2016.

BFL has certainly had its ups and downs over the last 10 years, with Frontier, Mexicana, and Allegiant all coming and going, and service ending to SLC, IAH, LAS, LAX, and GDL over that period. Passenger totals peaked at around 340,000 in 2006, but despite a few ups and downs, have fallen to the low 200,000's and stayed there for the last couple of years.

Bakersfield is not a small metro area, and is certainly one of the faster growing parts of the state, so it stands to reason that leakage to places like BUR, LAX, and even FAT is high. Hopefully, the city will be able to hold on to this service (the details of which have not been announced, but will presumably be on a CRJ-700 or E-175). However, with AA being the most likely carrier, it seems unlikely that fares will drop a lot, if at all.

Time will tell...

Just so you're aware, these federal grants that are being received do not indicate that these routes are officially starting on said airline. It's certainly a step in the right direction, though. It's still up to the airline (in this case, American Airlines) to determine whether or not they should start the route.
Next flights:
PDX-LAX-MIA (American)
MCO-DFW-PDX (American)

The existing thread is a good reference, but this subject deserves its own topic.

I don’t see why AA can’t successful resume DFW to BFL, BUR, and LGB on an E-175. They are all large population centers.

The SCASD application was for either Dallas or Houston.

Considering the application is 10 monthd old by now and much has changed, let's see how AA and UA react.

It's not uncommon for SCASD award to end up being unused.

The BFL SCASD application only had a support letter from AA for DFW service, there was no support letter from UA for Houston.

Even though the application was for either Dallas or Houston my guess is they just threw IAH in as a possibility to get Kern County oil industry support and as a possible backup use of the funds.

Both the announcement from Rep. Kevin McCarthy's office and multiple Bakersfield media sources only bring up DFW.
