Per the Chinese links, URC in Northwest China's Xinjiang region has been pushing ahead with its significant expansion plan for 2 additional runways

URC has secured governmental approval for its expansion project, including the construction of a new 450,000 sqm terminal, as well as 2 additional rwys

A second rwy would be 3,600 m long, 60 m wide
A third rwy 3,200 m long, 60 m wide

The completion of the expansion project would enable URC to handle 63 million pax per annum by 2030

The expansion plan is long overdue, given the outstanding geographical location of the airport in the central region of the Euro-Asian landmass.

The aviation potential for URC and Xinjiang would simply be endless, provided terrorism threats are properly tackled

Will the new runways be parallel to the present 07-25 or some other heading? Looking at Google maps, the only immediately available space is for parallel runways.

Yes - you can see the construction on Google Maps just north of the current complex. They started demolishing buildings a year or so ago and now there's quite a lot of earthmoving on. There's an expressway currently cutting across the expansion area, but it's being rerouted (also visible on Google). The new terminal complex will be midfield, between the parallel runways.

Unsure if the current terminals will stay in service or not - many other Chinese airports have opened large new terminals recently that have completely replaced the old buildings. Tianjin turned their old terminal into a corporate jet center, Zhengzhou turned theirs into a convention hall. Wuhan and Shenyang's old terminals are connected to the new buildings, but are currently closed off and will only reopen when traffic justifies. Shenzhen will tear their old terminals down. Guiyang remodeled their old terminal to match the new one, and integrated it with the new complex. So it's anybody's guess, really.

Recent noteworthy developments re URC:

The Chinese government has approved a $6bn expansion project of Urumqi Airport in Xinjiang (https://www.airport-technology.com/news ... i-airport/)

The expansion——including construction of two additional runways——is scheduled to run through to 2030 when the airport is predicted to manage 750,000t of cargo and 63 million passengers a year

Separately, Hainan Airlines is to relinquish its controlling stake in URC-based Urumqi Air by transferring its holdings to the Urumqi municipal government, and will just retain management rights (http://www.atimes.com/article/hainan-ai ... urumqi-ai/)

Given these developments, CZ, the biggest hub carrier in URC, should be spurred to ramp up activity there. Pax traffic for URC in 2017 was over 21 million, with CZ’s share at approx 50%
