Algerian Air Force IL-76 At Kden Today!

Mon Mar 11, 2002 7:48 am

Well went out and did my usual spotting, and to my surprise an Algerian Air Force Ilyushin IL-76 was there! What an aircraft.. I've never seen one before, and my oh my is it one hell of an aircraft. Loud as hell too! The darn APU howls like no other.

Tail number of this aircraft was 7T-WIE.

Pretty cool being in Denver eh? Now can someone tell me why this might come to Denver?

Thanks

I dunno why, but over the past few years we have been getting a lot of planes from the Middle East.

We've gotten the Saudi government many times, and once a government plane from Oman.

I really have no idea why. Maybe some big government officials have luxury condos in Aspen.

That is my only guess.

I thought IL-76's have been banned from the US?

BA, if they had a condo in Aspen, why the hell would they take an IL-76 to get there?!

LY744,

I don't know, because they want to.

When one of the princes of Saudi Arabia came to his big house in Aspen, he came in an A340.

Same goes for the IL-76.

Over the last few years there have been quite a few IL-76's sitting on the Air Cargo Carriers ramp in Milwaukee. They looked to have a Volga Dnepr paint scheme, but I don't know who operated them. I once saw a flight to Baku, I assumed that's somewhere in the former Soviet Union. That doesn't have anything to do with an Algerian plane, but I thought I would share my IL-76 sightings.

Yeah, the Il-76 and the A340 have a lot in common. One is a quiet, comfortable FBW widebody airliner and the other is a military cargo transport known for it's short and rough field performance, as well as being noisy, short-ranged (as compared to the A340), and fuel-thirsty.
Although I'd love to fly in an Il-76, I doubt a bunch of corrupt officlals would.  Laugh out loud

How many en route stops would an Il76 have to make across the Atlantic? Reykjavik and Gander? I'd love to fly in one of those things though, what a beast.
