The Environmentalists & [the Problem With] The SST

Mon Mar 11, 2002 9:39 am

Noise/chemical pollution and the sonic boom is what environmentalists hate about SST's, if someone could get rid of one of these major stumbling blocks, would they gain the trust of those who hate SST's?

Or is this just a pipe-dream, huh?

IMAO, most of the vocal environmentalists will find anything to complain about, especially with regards to technological advances. Of course, they make their objections known thru e-mail, computer-generated flyers, and making cell-phone calls to the media. There are probably some environemntal groups and even more individuals that are more genuine in their concern about our stewardship of the Lord's creation, but they do not get the headlines that the radicals do.

It will be hard to convince them, in my opinion.

If Boeing really manages to produce an aircraft will less pollution, above all regarding engine noise and chemical pollution, then I'm sure, the environmentalists will have less to oppose.

BUT: On the other hand, if new technologies are developped to make the SST environmental-friendlier, why not apply the same technic to a "conventional" aircraft, and make this one even better?

Hardcore environmentalists will not stop at anything short of the complete dismantling of the technological society and the return to their idylic life "in harmony with nature" (but without hunting or farming as those obviously damage the environment).

Probably airliners.net is not the best place to defend "hardcore environmentalists"

however

Those extremely loud, polluting, smoking and fuel sucking DC8's, 707's, BAC1-11, etc.

I think we must be glad that they are banned now ... and it wasn't the spotters / aircraft enthousiasts that were behind this improvement !

I still like to see a howling smoking DC8 however ..

No one will ever thank a "enviromentalist" when a 757 or A320 flys over and you can barely hear it. Have you seen all the Canadian Geese that are back ? its was those damn "enviromentalists" baning DDT use ... now our nose cowls and fan blades are takeing a beating... yeah the world would be better off if the "enviromentalists" would just let corporate greed run un-checked....

The point is that environmentalists are not so much concerned about noise or pollution levels of some aircraft types. Their main argument is that there is a lot of "unnecessary" air traffic going on.

Of course, these exact people still want to use the latest computer hardware, eat exotic fruit and take part in fancy self-experience tours, visiting the Himalaya.

OK, I am simplifying the problem a bit, but you get my point. If you're enjoying the positive sides of our "modern world", you gotta accept some of the negative side-effects.

On an interesting side-note, a poll amongst German voters has demonstrated that people voting for the Green Party are likely to go on vacation more frequently and to more distant places than voters of "ecology-unfriendly" parties.

Hmm...  Yeah sure

Just in case that an unforseen technological advance did manage to get around the emissions problem, Friends Of The Earth made it quite clear in the early 1990's that they would campaign against the 'possible' effects of a large fleet of SST's sonic-booms on marine life. They clearly thought that any new SST would like Concorde, be restricted to overwater supercruise.
Indeed that was both Boeing and BAe/Aerospatiales thinking then, try to make an efficent SST in both subsonic and supersonic flight.
Never mind that there is no evidence, and no research has been done, into any possible effect of frequent booms on marine life.
But there is no technical panecea for the SST's problems.
SST is a hate word to many.
As much as I love Concorde, I live near enough LHR to be glad that the originally projected 200-400 aircraft were not built.

Let's say that in a couple decades at the most, there came an aircraft that does not harm the environment in any way, yet is still efficient enough to be economical -- for the sake of argument -- what could they possibly whine about?

There is absolutly nothing to whine about, it is perfect, it is a dream...  Love

I dream about not needing oil anymore ... just think about all the human lifes that would be saved if we didn't need oil ??? we can make an aircraft thats solar or hydrogen powered... thats where the future should be ....
