What Airport Serves The Most Airlines?

Mon Mar 11, 2002 2:47 pm

What's the record # of airlines to fly into any single aerodrome? And what airport?

My guesses would have to include ..... MIA and LAX.

Thanks kids!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

No way would it be MIA. Not by a long way.

I doubt it is LHR - due to the fact that there are many airlines (especially US carriers) that are not allowed to fly there.

My guess would be JFK, NRT, FRA etc.

LHR has something around 96 different airlines serving it. Once Bermuda II gets lifted, that number might just go over 100 with US Airways, Continental, Delta, and Northwest joining.

I would've assumed it was LHR, since thwre seems to be more smaller airlines in Europe than US, and more Asian airlines serve Europe than the USA. I would guess FRA and LHR would take the cake. MIA has a ton, because there are so many Latin Airlines flying to MIA.

BTW, isn't LHR at such a runway slot shortage that it couldn't fit anymore flights.

I would love to work for BAA at LHR or again for PANYNJ at JFK. Now that would be great work.

I can't see how it can be LHR. Remember, you have at least half a dozen US carriers that aren't allowed to fly there and must go to LGW instead, as well as many African carriers who can only get slots at LGW. Also, carriers like Garuda etc.

If you combined LHR and LGW together, that would definitely be number 1, but because of slot restrictions/Bermuda I can't see how it could be LHR.

At first I thought of LHR too. I know that roughly 150 (+/- a few) airlines serve FRA. That number also includes charters, if they also count as "real" airline.

In the Eastern Hemisphere it is Frankfurt-Main, in the Western Hemisphere it is Miami/Wilcox.

LHR is extremely slot constrained, there simply isn't any more space for additional services, the runways are clogged, (only 2 being used, when there's 3) the gates are always full and generally LHR is operating at maximum capacity. LHR needs T5 as quick as possible and a 4th runway.
