Pro Air Acquires Aircraft to Launch Pro Air Express; New Service to Feed Jet Flights From Smaller Cities
DETROIT, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move that will allow it to develop a regional operation to feed its jet flights, Pro Air Inc. today announced that it will launch ``Pro Air Express'' service from its base at Detroit City Airport. The airline will acquire three SAAB 2000 aircraft for the new service.

The new aircraft will enable Pro Air to introduce flights from its Detroit hub to several small-to medium-sized cities which currently do not enjoy reasonably priced air service. These new flights will also provide connections to Pro Air's low-fare jet operation. The airline is currently evaluating destinations for the new service and will announce new routes after signing agreements with airport officials and obtaining all necessary government approvals for the new service.

``This is a milestone in the history of Pro Air,'' said Kevin Stamper, chairman and CEO of Pro Air. ``Our acquisition of these aircraft will strengthen our position as Detroit's new alternative for air travel.''

The SAAB 2000 is one of the quietest and most modern regional aircraft in the world. The aircraft is designed to seat up to 50 passengers, but Pro Air Express will operate it with only 36 seats in a comfortable corporate configuration that includes a voluminous storage area for carry-on baggage.

Pro Air re-opened Detroit City Airport to commercial service on July 4, 1997, and slashed the existing fares on its routes by up to 85 percent. The airline offers a simplified fare structure, extra legroom, and one of the youngest fleet of aircraft in the industry. Pro Air currently operates Boeing 737 aircraft from Detroit City Airport to Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington D.C., Chicago Midway, Indianapolis, Newark, New York LaGuardia, Orlando and Philadelphia. The airline also provides seasonal service from Detroit to Fort Myers and Tampa.

I wonder what colors the tails will be? So far I think they have a teal/aqua green 737-400 (N461PR) and a red 737-400 (N460PR) and a yellow 737-300 (N360PR) Any others I missed?I think they have another 737-300 and another 737-400 coming but it is hard to tell from their web site since there haven't been any new Press Releases since January.

GM's Saab 2000s?

Thu Aug 26, 1999 7:07 am

Knowing that there are only 3 Saab 2000 a/c in the US, I think I see what is really happening with our friends in Detroit.

With only 36 seats in the aircraft, they're essentially flying an aircraft that should be configured 1x2 as a 1x1 seating. Somebody remind them that a 2000 is not a B1900!

I'm sure the fact that General Motors (they signed a corporate agreement w/ Proair on 6/11/98) currently operates 3 Saab 2000s as corporate a/c plays a major role in ProAir Express flying the 2000 also.

As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the 3 Saab 2000s ProAir plans to fly are actually the aircraft that GM is currently flying. It'd make sense of the "Corporate" seating arrangement. Could this put ProAir under?

Perhaps these two GM aircraft are part of the fleet in question...
