USAirways Cutting International?

My friend just called me and told me her husband who works for USAirways told me they plan to cut the International routes and focus on domestic routes. Is there any truth to this? Has anyone heard about it. He said its part of their "restructuring" to stay in business.
I have a hard time believing this but who knows.
I believe I can fly.....

yeah, because then they'd fly A330s from PHL to PIT.

meanwhile, my friend's milkman's sister said that Southwest is going to begin flying to Australia....

yeah, they need their international routes to survive, and they would have bought the 330's for basically no reason.

Honestly, it doesnt' sound completely far fetched to me. They are not a major playor in the international market. I don't know their routes offhand, but they don't compare to United, American, Delta. I'm certain they could use lease the A330's. Stranger and more drastic things have happened in Aviation, TWA, Eastern and Pan Am, all cut international routes and focused on domestic. Although they never recovered. On that note, maybe USairways should take the lesson learned from them and not cut them, if indeed that is what they are planning.

Is it so suprsing that an airline that is losing it's ass might want to get rid of these money losing Intl. routes?
I can assure you Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Italy are money losers with no end in sight.

The original reason TW and Pan Am got into trouble was because the concentrated on Intl. while not growing their domestic system. By the time they realized this, International route cuts were too little, too late.

i really wouldnt consider usairways focusing on transatlantic flts, they only have 8 european dest. compared to like 15-20 by the other major carriers

for spring break im going nyc to paris round trip for 300.

Pan Am was unable to grow domestically because the Feds wouldn't let them until the CAB was eliminated in '79. They were stymied at every turn when they tried to start up any sort of domestic network, by government regulators playing on the side of the domestic carriers. It wasn't negligence that kept PA from developing a domestic feed to spur international growth.

If US cut international services it actually wouldn't hurt them. They could make some money selling off the A330s on top of it. They already cut PIT-LGW/CDG, CLT-CDG/FRA, and PHL-BRU, although both PIT flights will be back very soon. Still, considering thier only number six, some of thier destinations, in particular Madrid and Rome, don't make sense.

Well, as easy as it is to compare US to airlines that folded 15-20 yrs ago, no one has yet put forth any evidence that US is losing its shirt internationally.

In the next 2 weeks, they are reinstating several routes from PIT / CDG and restoring daily capacity on routes from PHL.

Finally, I tried hard to find a decent fare to Europe for the late spring and US was more expensive than every carrier from ORD or PHL to FCO

Other US airlines make Intl routes work with the help of their alliance partners and when this is not an option they can at least break even due their market dominance. U may have a little of this in PHL, but it's a hard battle.

Another thing, US has spent a lot of $$$$ to build the new international terminal at PHL, due to open at the end of the summer....

No doubt that was a major nail in PA's coffin. But consider:

1.) At the point of deregulation in '79, PA was already in dire financial straits due to the energy crisis and the CAB's favoritism with respect to domestic carriers.

2.) At deregulation, PA was put at a strategic disadvantage, as many of the domestic carriers (ie, Delta, American, TWA, etc.) already had been given international routes by the CAB in addition to their regular domestic routes.

USAir just had a change of management--anything is possible.

The 330's and the international buildup were done during Wolf's tenure--not exactly a stellar performance.TC

US Airways is a classic example of how not to run an airline. The carrier is a hodge-podge of small, regional carriers that existed until the late 1980's, including PSA, Piedmont, USAir (formerly Allegheny). The airline's management has never focused on driving down its sky-high cost structure, it has an extensive East Coast route system but it faces stiff competition from Delta,
Southwest, Continental, and even American and United in many of its traditional core markets, many of which do not make money. The carrier has spend zillions on brand spanking new airplanes, but Steven Wolf wanted to merge it with United. The DOJ didn't allow it.

I'd be sad to see US Airways go down the drain, but it probably will. I wouldn't be surprised to see it folded into a larger carrier, namely UA, DL, or even CO or NW a la TWA, but sooner, rather than later. It is a grossly mismanaged airline with a sorry product and surly service, despite the new planes, paint job, and whatever other cosmetic approaches were applied to cover up for what is arguably the most pointless and aimless US airline.

US Airways Restores Transatlantic Service
ARLINGTON, Va., March 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways will restore most of its transatlantic operations over the next three months with the return of flights between the U.S. and Europe that were suspended temporarily following the reduction in traffic after September 11.

Roundtrip transatlantic flights will increase from the current 61 weekly to 98 weekly with the return of daily frequencies serving US Airways' key destinations in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands from its international gateways of Charlotte, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

For the summer schedule, US Airways also will reintroduce its larger state-of-the-art Airbus A330-300 aircraft on many routes, supplementing U.S.- Europe operations using Boeing 767-200 aircraft.

Effective March 16, US Airways will restore daily nonstop roundtrip service between its primary international gateway at Philadelphia and Amsterdam, Munich and Madrid, using Boeing 767-200 aircraft, and Rome, with A330-300 aircraft. US Airways' routes serving Amsterdam, Rome and Madrid currently operate with five flights weekly, and Munich is served with four flights weekly.

Also on March 16, US Airways will resume daily nonstop roundtrip flights from Pittsburgh to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, using Boeing 767 equipment; and to London Gatwick Airport with A330-300s. Pittsburgh-Paris service was suspended in December 2001, and Pittsburgh-London flights were suspended in February 2002.

On May 4, daily nonstop flights will return between Charlotte and Frankfurt (suspended in October 2001), using Boeing 767 aircraft. Also on May 4, daily nonstop Charlotte-London Gatwick capacity will expand from Boeing 767 to A330-300 operations.

A second daily Philadelphia-London service, using Boeing 767 aircraft, starting on June 16, will mark the completion of US Airways' increased transatlantic program for 2002.

From Philadelphia, the airline will this summer operate daily nonstop flights to Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Frankfurt, Madrid, Manchester and Munich, in addition to twice-daily flights serving London. From Charlotte, US Airways will operate daily service to London and Frankfurt, and from Pittsburgh the airline will offer daily service to Frankfurt, London and Paris.

US Airways, the US Airways Express carriers and US Airways Shuttle provide service to 205 destinations worldwide, including 38 states in the U.S., Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Cancun, Cozumel, Freeport, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Nassau, San Juan, Santo Domingo, St. Croix, St. Lucia, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. I think It would be smart of US to take its faith in its own hands and strike seperate deals some of the transatlantic airlines to execute their European flights in codeshare...

AMS with KL/NW, CDG with AF etc..

That's excellent news on the US Air transatlantic service!

And I just have to say ContinentalEWR, it's no secret that US Airways is in tenuous financial shape due to several factors, but the rest of your post shows the maturity level of an 8 year old.

Which of the other US airlines is USAir most closely tied?

Also,I can understand airlines like NW forking out for new 32xs when they still had 727s flying but US's 737 arent that old really!

Again, look at Steve Wolf's history. He bought Airbuses for UAL even though they were still receiving 737's. He has surely cut a deal with AB to get "consideration" when he orders planes.TC

UA needed soem planes that could trans-America non-stop but they didnt need to get so many at such a stage argubly!I also wonder why BA ordered the 320s when their 734s arent particularly accient!

I suppose anything is possible these days. However, with a large expansion of both PHL's and CLT's international terminals which are both to open this summer, it looks to me that US Airways is preparing for a expansion of their international service rather than a reduction or elimination of them.

Donder -- US bought the narrowbody Airbus planes to replace older DC-9, 727s, and 737-200s. There are nor were there ever plans to replace newer 737-300s and 737-400s.

I also just flew USAirways to Europe for Spring Break and believe me they were cheap. Orlando to Frankfurt was only $415, though at one point Continental was offering the flight for $380. I flew PIT-FRA on Saturday and it was full, not a single seat left on the A330. or on the 762 from MCO-PIT. Both flights were full. I think they break more than even on these flights if they are full.

Someone here said that their service was surly. I assure U I would much rather fly USAirways over any other US airline I have flown across the Atlantic with and that includes everyone except Continental.
