The End Of Qualiflyer Is Now Closer!

With the choice of Swiss Air Lines Ltd being shortly unveiled for its future global alliance (Sky Team or Star alliance), and the future choice of LOT as well, the Qualiflyer Group alliance is set to disapear in a few weeks... 4 of its funding previous members are now bankrupt (SR, SN, AOM-Air Liberté).
The question now is to know where Turkish Airlines, TAP and SN Brussels Airlines are going to move.
It seems the 21st century sky will be shaped up by 4 Global Alliances : One World, Wings, Sky Team & Star Alliance.

If Swiss joins Star Alliance, I wonder what Austrian would say. An additional SA hub at ZRH will affect OS. With FRA, MUC and VIE, SA has already three big hubs in middle Europe. A fourth hub at ZRH will mean less passengers on the other three hubs, and I see VIE as the most affected hub.

I believe the Qualiflyer alliance has finished it's existance already.
Please, read the statement from LOT web site;

"
TERMINATION OF CO-OPERATION WITHIN THE QUALIFLYER GROUP. THE QUALIFLYER FREQUENT FLYER PROGRAMME CONTINUED

At the meeting of the CEOs of the airlines participating in the The Qualiflyer Group*, held in Zurich on February 8, 2002, a decision was taken to terminate the co-operation within the alliance. The Qualiflyer Frequent Flyer Programme** will continue unaltered.

around 3 or 3 weeks ago there was a Qualiflyer Group meeting. They decided to continue the Qualiflyer Mileage Program with all members and in the same time they ended the Qualiflyer Group...

The best, what they could do. That way, SWISS and any other former Qualiflyer airline can join whatever suits them best.

Flying Belgian,

You mentioned the choices of Swiss being a Skyteam or Star Alliance member. What happened to the possibility of Swiss joining One World? Did Iberia get upset over this?

How about the KLM-Northwest and partners alliance "Wings". Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Amsterdam the only European hub for this alliance? Zurich would have a fair chance in this alliance. All other alliances already have multiple hubs in Europe.

The choices Flying Belgian mentioned are exactly the two to be ruled out! There have been many hints - from SWISS managers and the operational side - that Oneworld will be the alliance of choice. Star Alliance has officially been ruled out by André Dose. The race will be made between SkyTeam and Oneworld. Oneworld will take it home....

Oneworld's main European hubs are MAD in South Europe, HEL in Scandinavia and LHR in England. They don't have a hub in Central Europe. So, SWISS would fit quite nicely into Oneworld with its hub ZRH.

Lets hope SWISS make the sensible decision to move to OneWorld.
Joining Star would be a disaster... they have too many Euro airlines, you only need four norhtern Europe East/Central and southern.
SA has like 3 airlines in Central, SAS in Scandinavia, bmi and LH in the north and all that. i think it would be wise for Start to concentrate on airlines in Africa, the same for oneworld too.

Swissair (and crossair) had strong toes and codeshares with American so it wouldnt suprise me if they were to at least keep those ties as Swiss.
