Why was a Dreamlifter circling over Pinal Air Park (MZJ)?

Fri Nov 09, 2018 3:45 am

I only am aware of this odd Dreamlifter flight because I saw it circling north of Tucson at 9,000 feet for 30 min today. Scheduled PAE-MZJ this Dreamlifter finally flew to LAX after all sorts of loops over Marana. Anyone know anything?

Are we talking loops as in going vertical or loops as in looping around Marana?

Not sure what exactly the deal is but there is zero chance a Dreamlifter was actually going to Marana (runway is too short and there are no facilities to support it). Pinal perhaps but not Marana. Looks like it went to land at Pinal but then didn't for some reason.

I hope you are not serious with that question!

I knew bringing Tex Johnson back to life was a bad idea.

MZJ is Pinal Air Park, formerly (and still commonly in aviation circles) called 'Marana'. Not to be confused with nearby Marana-Avra Valley Regional Airport.

Atlas Air got into (and out of) Marana Regional about 20 years ago.....

I assume that the OP was referring to Pinal Air Park, as MZJ is in the thread title. People often confuse them since MZJ is essentially in Marana. Evergreen used to operate the facility at MZJ, so the Dreamlifters were based there before the contract was given to Atlas under fairly controversial circumstances.

Like...on purpose? I realize that MZJ and AVQ have the same runway orientation, but that's not something you'd want to screw up!

Looks like it's headed for Marana again soon -- must have been a runway issue? yesterday.

The 944 Heavy Water Bomber was stationed there for a while (I have fotos).. so they can take a 744/748.
learning never stops.

Quite true. Many retired 747s at MZJ. Delta's 747-400 fleet ended up there around a year ago when they were being retired. Some are still there.

Aircraft had a Anti Skid message, diverted to LAX for their longer runway and on site maintenance staff.

"Cleared for a visual approach to the Pinal Airpark. Radar service terminated, change to advisory frequency approved."

Not much different than when Atlas landed at Jabara, except that it was talking to a control tower then instead of UNICOM.

A runway that is too short for a Dreamlifter, and no facilities to support it? Sounds familiar............
