AA 787 to Cancun

Wed Nov 14, 2018 1:03 am

Anyone else noticed American sending their 78’s to Cancún from ORD? I guess it’s in high demand! Maybe United will follow?

United flew a domestic 777 there last winter from ORD. Since ORD isn't a 787 base for UA you won't see it flying ORD-CUN for UA any time soon. I don't know if the domestic 777 is scheduled on the route again this winter.

AA is also sending a B787 from ORD to SFO, and DFW to LAS.

LAS has picked up a lot of domestic wide-body flights this month and next. In addition to the AA 787 to DFW, AA is running 763s to PHL and MIA on multiple flights. United is doing 763s to ORD and there are a few others as well.

Delta used to fly A330s from MSP and DTW to CUN. There's high demand for leisure traffic there in this time of the year...

It is not really high demand.. 2 787-8 are replacing 3 737-800's, which is actually a slight net loss in seats. It is a way to use the 787's and the crews are all already international. It seems like AA has a few more 787-8's right now than international routes to fly them on. They are also flying them DFW-CUN, so they can use CUN as a bridge between the two airports.

There 787's are welcome in Brisbane. Hopefully we see them if the QF/AA JV is approved :)

Actually, when LAA had separate domestic and international flight attendant bases and operations CUN was a “domestic” bid and also didn’t have Spanish LOD (language of destination) positions either. Crews who were fluent still conversed with passengers onboard but were not required to make the PAs in Spanish nor were they paid the premium.

On the widebody scene to CUN, AA has been sending the 767-300 from MIA to CUN, and its on the schedule next month with a 0930 departure. I know on the early MIA-CUN departures is mostly deep South America connections.

With the demise of the B767-300ER fleet, is there any chance of seeing the American B787-8 at other Caribbean airports, like Punta Cana, Barbados, Montego Bay, St. Maarten or something else?

AA has nothing else to do with the plane. United has no such problem so I doubt you’ll see a UA 787 on such a mismatched route.

Possibly the 787 on the ORD-CUN-ORD route is being utilized during the day and when it returns to ORD it goes on to Europe.

They're also flying a once daily ORD-PHX early next year as well.

The 788s really aren't doing much long haul flying over the winter. Looking at February schedules, I see 3x daily ORD-LHR, 3x weekly ORD-NRT, 5x weekly DFW-CDG, and 6x weekly DFW-PEK. The rest appears to be short haul flying: ORD-PHX, 2x daily ORD-CUN, DFW-SFO, DFW-CUN, and a 4x daily bridge between DFW and ORD.

But isn't it also a way to get in takeoff and landing experience on short 787 flights to train crew?

The reply is saying CUN is no longer a INTL trip and doesn't require a language speaker.

OK ... I misunderstood then. I read it as: in the past when when the crews were separate, CUN was considered domestic and didn't require a language speaker. I took that to mean that the bases are now mixed and not separated by international and domestic.
So - they're still separate?

Still separate. Cancun is just considered a "domestic" route because majority of the travelers are tourists on holiday.

No more domestic or international crews. All the same now. Have been for a few years. Mexico IS now considered Intl. for pay. Still no speakers on CUN and SJD. Very few if any native Mexicans/Spanish only customers on these flights.

Why on earth are they not using these 787s on EU flights ex-PHL to replace a few of decrepit 767s?

Flight attendants are no longer separated, pilots still are I believe.

Within the next 2-3 years the 787 will replace the 767 in PHL as they retire them. There is an article about this too.

Interesting, learned something new today. Makes sense for no Spanish speakers to CUN, since it is all tourist. SJD is a bit of a surprise, I would think it would have some local traffic.

Crews can operate IPD and DOM at the same time. You can be in London one week and Austin the next. Just an example.

Flight attendants are no longer separated, pilots still are I believe.

For pilots, it depends on the base/fleet flown. Certain fleets have dual statuses at one hub, and single bid statuses at others (for example, 737s are domestic-only at LAX/DCA/BOS, international-only at MIA (this is a newer development; the base was previously dual) and both D/I at ORD/DFW/LGA) with the latter becoming much more common as management seeks to further streamline operations and pilot coverage.

I saw an AA ORD-HNL 788 in April. Not sure if this was just for Easter/Spring break or for the entire winter/spring season.

They're doing this because they're pulling ORD - China flying. They literally have no better place to put 787s. Cancun has pretty high fares in the peak winter (actually higher than what AA could get on their China flights), so it makes sense to put them there.
United still has better uses for their widebodies, so you wont see UA widebodies on these flights.

because in the winter the planes make more $$$ flying sun starved tourists to Cancun than to Europe. Very easy.

Isn't PHL an A330 base? Because I've seen a lot of AA TATL flights out of PHL using A332/333. That might change if/when more 787s are placed into service, but that's my recollection.

Except UA is flying a 777 on saturdays, same as last year.
