It is a way to use the 787's and the crews are all already international. It seems like AA has a few more 787-8's right now than international routes to fly them on. They are also flying them DFW-CUN, so they can use CUN as a bridge between the two airports.

Actually, when LAA had separate domestic and international flight attendant bases and operations CUN was a “domestic” bid and also didn’t have Spanish LOD (language of destination) positions either. Crews who were fluent still conversed with passengers onboard but were not required to make the PAs in Spanish nor were they paid the premium.

AA is also sending a B787 from ORD to SFO, and DFW to LAS.

I must be behind ... AA no longer has separate international and domestic crews?

The reply is saying CUN is no longer a INTL trip and doesn't require a language speaker.

OK ... I misunderstood then. I read it as: in the past when when the crews were separate, CUN was considered domestic and didn't require a language speaker. I took that to mean that the bases are now mixed and not separated by international and domestic.
So - they're still separate?

Still separate. Cancun is just considered a "domestic" route because majority of the travelers are tourists on holiday.

Flight attendants are no longer separated, pilots still are I believe.

jasoncrh wrote:They're doing this because they're pulling ORD - China flying. They literally have no better place to put 787s. Cancun has pretty high fares in the peak winter (actually higher than what AA could get on their China flights), so it makes sense to put them there.
United still has better uses for their widebodies, so you wont see UA widebodies on these flights.
crownvic wrote:LAS has picked up a lot of domestic wide-body flights this month and next. In addition to the AA 787 to DFW, AA is running 763s to PHL and MIA on multiple flights. United is doing 763s to ORD and there are a few others as well.
