Premium Economy

Both American and United have upgraded their Economy Class products relatively recently, with two very different concepts: "more room throughout coach" and "Economy Plus" respectively. I personally prefer the former, as everyone gets the enhanced room, as opposed to United's Economy Plus, where you have to be lucky.

My question is this: In neither case are passengers paying any extra money for the added leg-room. So which do you think will prove the more productive strategy in the long-run, American's or United's?

And secondly, you would think that the extra leg-room is most valuable on long-haul flights. Yet both airlines seem to be concentrating their features on the domestic market. Why not instead introduce Economy Plus or More room in Coach on those endless trans-Pacific flights where they woudl surely be more appreciated?

I was lucky enough to get a UA Economy Plus seat from Tokyo to Singapore last week. And boy did it make a world of difference. I had a regular coach ticket, with a seat in row 54. I asked the agent if I could be moved up closer and she moved me to row 32. I noticed that my new boarding pass she gave me said "Economy Plus" on it and was very surprised. I asked her how they handle EP and she told me that after all their Premier Mileage passengers, who don't get upgraded, are seated in EP, then it is first come first serve basis. The bad thing is that during the flight, I went for a walk through the aircraft and saw the poor people sitting in regular economy, while there was still about 15 open EP seats! But let me tell you those were the best economy seats I have ever sat in. Great job UA!!!!

As you say, AA has introduced "more room throughout coach". Anyone who purchases a coach class ticket, be it a consolidated "tactical" offer, or a full published Y class fare will have the same amount of room. UA on the other hand reserves Economy Plus ofr full fare paying passengers, Premier Mileage passengers and those who have the nouse to ask at the gate. Everyone else is crammed in at the back.

More room throughout coach has been introduced on (I believe) all AA aircraft now, including trans-pacific and -atlantic, and is about 90% done with the old TW aircraft.
