I would assume that this airline will be operating 727-200s. Any idea what the name will be? Hopefully Pan Am "Carribean" or something with Pan Am in it.

Just 'Pan Am' would be fine with me......! That name fits into the skies over the Caribbean like a foot into a well worn tennis shoe. Perfectly!

While it's exciting that the airline is exploring a bold new tact, I hope it isn't because they've decided they've failed abysmally at the first effort.

Plans to launch Pan American World Airways to be based in the Dominican Republic.
Panam recently bought 24 ex-United Airlines Boeing 727-200s and plans to use some or most of these aircraft to operate from the Dominican Republic to destinations in the Caribbean, Central and South America.

Following is the list of aircraft that Panam is obtaining from United Airlines :
N7253U - N7254U - N7255U - N7257U - N7259U - N7260U
N7261U - N7266U - N7283U - N7298U - N7299U - N7441U
N7442U - N7444U - N7446U - N7448U - N7449U - N7450U
N7456U - N7457U - N7458U - N7459U - N7464U - N7467U

The name is ok, but the routes are even more cool - these routes have got a real chill factor. I wish I worked at this airline. Central America and the Caribbean must be among the grooviest spots on Earth (been there) to work for an airline.

I have been to Central America and the Caribbean, but not yet to Hispaniola. I was planning to go there in 1999 and to go to Port-au-Prince too, but ended up going to somewhere else.

Who needs a visa to come to the Domenican Republic? Is there a website where I can check this?

Thanks,

I've heard alot about this and from many newspaper about Pan Am's plan. But why haven't they posted the news on their website yet? why havent they updated their website? Since according to orlando Setinel, the first new service will be starting as soon as by the end of April to Freeport, Bahamas from Orlando/Sanford. Also the Boston-Maine Airways Clipper Connection new inter-florida will begin at the same time too but they have not mention any of these things at their website.

Delta777, Santiago de Dominican Republic (STI), not Santiago de Chile (SCL). Not a bad summer for STI. American Airlines is launching STI's first service to the mainline US in June (MIA-STI and JFK-STI) and now Pan Am is going to start MIA-STI.

A lot of these routes sound like a great idea, for ex. the SFB-SDQ route finally a scheduled flight between Central Florida and the Dominican Republic, on the other hand I find a Portsmouth-SDQ route a biy iffy . A route that I don't think can support a 727 is the SDQ-Point A Pitre. Yes I know that Miami has a big Dominican Population but do u all think that tnere is enough demand for two airlines to operate the MIA-STI flight, in my opinion an EWR-STI flight because there is no competition. Y ahora en Pan Am a servir Mangu.

There will always be demand for a second MIA-STI flight, I think. I hope it works. MIA-PUJ is going to be the best one. LanChile flies the route right now, but only on weekends. AA is introducing the route too, but has delayed it from summer to fall. PanAm can get a head start.

Yes Cabo Verde Santiago has a lot of things going for them, they are the center of commercial activity in El Cibao and they are the second most important city in the Dominican Republic but there is also a drawback, this flight mainly caters to expat Dominicans in Miami from the El Cibao region or people from Santiago that want to go to Miami this will be a flight that wont cater to the turist unlike flights to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. Another route that has me concerned is the SJU-SDQ route, yes we have a huge Dominican community here is Puerto Rico but it's a route that various airlines have axed ex. APA(while it was still around), Aeromar and a couple of others - AA Eagle and AA don't like competition on routes were they have almost a complete monopoly and AA has a loyal customer base in both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Air Santo Domingo has been able to continue flying this route because they are flying from SJU to Herrera and now AA Eagle harrases them with an SJU-Herrera flight.

Will the Dom Rep. STI be organized as a true hub? I imagine Pan Am can make a huge shake up by offering competive 1 plane change tickets from some US areas to many Latin American places. Both the New York and Florida area will fight for tickets to GUA, SDO, BOG, SJU etc. in the $150-300 price range.
Anyone knows if they will tune their flight schedules to make hub flying possible?
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Its so good that PanAm will fly to Panama City again.

The last I saw a PanAm aircraft, was the last year when the N364PA came to Panama, making a flight for Air Jamaica.

I will be going to PSM (Pan Am's headquarters) within the next couple of weeks on a tour, so I will try and dig up some more information and try and get a few of these planes on my camera's memory card and post them here. I believe they are all going to PSM first.

I got a connection to tour the general facilities at Portsmouth, so I don't know entirely of what it will entail, but I do know that I will get some time in one of the simulators on the property of PSM. I will post a report when I go (it's right after Easter). I'll also get some photos too, and have them uploaded here (if my camera decides to have an A.net day...)

I hope that this works out for Pan Am.........is there adequate traffic to support all of these routes out of the Dominican Republic?

Also, dont you think that AA is going to respond in some way to these plans? They have had a very comfortable (and profitable) command of the Carib/Central America market for years (all of those filled to capcity A300s flying into San Juan, etc are a good thing for AA) and they will fight to retain their position in the region.

Could be interesting.
