How Is LHR T5 Doing?

Sun Mar 17, 2002 12:48 am

I had heard that they have started construction but haven't seen anything about it. Have they started or does the dumbass government wan top delay development even further? I think it is a tragredy that the government has let Frankfurt and CDG catch up so much.

How about a third runway at LHR? I understand that one of the principals of getting T5 approval, was no 3rd runway. But I've heard some rumours that the goverment wants to construct three new runways in the South East, and one of them was supposed be at LHR. Is this true, will it ever happen?

This "dumbass government" does have British Law to follow i.e. a statutory Public Enquiry has to be made into major schemes such as these, thereby delaying things along. Not a level playing field when comparing Britain with other European countries.

However, LHR is not government-owned. If you need to gripe about any lack of development work since planning permission was granted, please level it at the appropriate people: the Board of Directors at BAA plc and their subsidiary Heathrow Airport Ltd.

It doesn't/shouldn't take 20 odd years to approve a public enquiry!

I think the 3 new runways in the south are all in places like Stansted and Luton but I believe one is going to LGW which is sorely needed. In my opinion the government should stop trying to spread out traffic across the South as LHR is the true UK hub and should take all of the traffic from Stansted, Luton etc.

So...... has construction started?

p.s. I am griping about the time it has taken to get planning permission! (20 odd years !!!!!!) I am just happy its finally going to happen but I was wondering if it had started.

Dont know about the construction work, but if it's any consolation, from length of time from public enquiry to operation of the 2nd runway at MAN was 7 years; 4 years after permission was granted. I think T5 is expected to be opened around 2005/6.

On the other bit, if the CAA is expecting a doubling/trebling of traffic in SE England, then even with the best will in the world LHR is not the only answer!

Just looking at a few long-haul routes sees that "bums on seats" can be achieved away from LHR: (CAA December 2001 stats, columns from left to right are route, passengers, change)

LHR-ORD 83425 -13.60%
MAN-ORD 17789 +88.72%

LHR-JFK 163489 -23.12%
MAN-JFK 10129 -20.12%

LHR-DXB 70963 +6.25%
LGW-DXB 14423 +14.57%
MAN-DXB 14342 +2.61%
BHX-DXB 11735 +204.73% (service began mid-December 2000)

LHR-SIN 87195 -13.43%
MAN-SIN 13468 +0.45%

LHR-KUL 42751 -6.59%
MAN-KUL 7233 +12.52%

The non-SE England based passengers attracted away from LHR, the better that local (i.e. SE England) expected demand can be filled at LHR.

Excuse me. I mean off course the 4th runway...
And I always considered LHR to be a two-runway airport.., how foolishly ignorant of me!

I know what you mean. What a load of horses..t that they needed 10 years to get a planning permit...only to construct a terminal. For Godsake, it is being built on a sewerage right in between two active runways!!! Now T5 will be real waste of greenland...

I know PW100 ,I was being sarci. If they were to build a third real runway then it would cost a ton just moving people from where the runway would be.Theres need to be a better long-term outlook on things like this.

The problem with the British government is all the beauracracy that comes with it, while the French and Germans just get on and go ahead with important infrastructure projects (i.e new airport terminals), we seem to dwell on it and go through pointless and time wasting public inquiries and all the other baggage that comes with it.

Little suprise T5 took decades to decide, but at least the government has woken up and realised the whole process is painfully slow and time consuming. Good job they're changing the whole process.

My first solution to LHR is NOT to build a third runway. If I recall (if wrong, someone please update me), LHR has a noise deal with the locals that says one runway is used from 0600-1500 and the other runway is used from 1500-2300. If this is true, then if I were the BAA, I would open up both runways at the same time, thus doubling the number of movements. If not, then build the third runway (excl. 5/23).
