North Central/Republic In 77 And 82

Wed Mar 20, 2002 10:19 pm

Does anyone remember at O'Hare Field where North Central Airlines Operated from in (don't laugh) 1977. Terminal and gate numbers? Also, in 1982 they were Republic. Would it be from where NW now operates?
Were they still in the same area? Usually I can see former things so clearly in my mind, but I can't call up this memory. Can anyone "jog" it for me?

Clear skies to all, (Happy Spring, supposedly)

I'm looking (on my office wall) of a picture I took at ORD in July of 1979 showing a North Central DC-9, and two of their Convair 580's. Also have on the same wall a picture of a Southern DC-9 taken in the same place.

According to my handy-dandy United Airlines Services and Information Guide dated Spring & Summer of 1981, Republic, at that time, occupied gates 5, 7, 9, 11, and 15 on the H concourse.

Hope this helps.

Tom: Many thanks. How did I live without this resource? Almost everything can be answered here...with a little help from our airline friends.

In 1979, North Central used the same gates on the H Concourse. I looked in my 1979 UAL Services & Information Guide.

Thanks to all for the info. I have a great pic of our daughter (at age 4) at a Republic gate at O'Hare. Since she now flies out of ORD as a F/A for UAL, I wanted to give her the pic, with the info on the back:
"Congrats on 20 yrs of flying in and out of ORD."
This is a photo of her very first visit to O'Hare.
Now, I know where it was taken. "H" Gates.

Hello, friends!

Would you mind doing everyone out here a favor and telling us where the "H" gates are/were. I, myself, am not that familiar with O'Hare, so I, too, would like to know.

Digging through the archives, I found a single photo of the plane which took us from GRR-ORD on that day in 1982. With the help of a magnifying
glass, I could barely make out N(?)80NC. It looked like maybe a "7" so I did a search here and found..
Republic DC-9-51 N780NC c/n 48102/932 which flew us that day.I also found that as of Nov of last year it was still with NW, which of course took over Republic.
Now, I can say with authority...that I can present a photo to our daughter of her very first airplane at age 4. It will make an interesting addition to her flight log. The great masses could not understand this joy and excitement, but those who lurk here do. Clear and memory-filled skies to all, --JaO

You found your plane...congratulations!!!

Any Northwest DC-9 whose "N" number ends in "NC" is in fact a DC-9-51. All of these aircraft were ordered by North Central, who took delivery of them in the very late 1970's just prior to the merger with Southern Airways.

N780NC is probably just over 20-some years old...one of our real baby 9's.
