AeroMexico In Talks With Airbus To Replace DC9's

Yesterday, CINTRA had its board of directors meeting where they revealed the future of AeroMexico and Mexicana. Two groups were created:

Grupo AeroMexico: AeroMexico, Aerolitoral, 50% of Alas de America, 50% of AeroMexpress, 50% of Aerosys and 15% of Turboreactores.

Grupo Mexicana: Mexicana, AeroCaribe, AeroCozumel, AeroMonterrey, 50% of Alas de America, 50% of AeroMexpress, 50% of Aerosys and 15% of Turboreactores.

The big surprise was that AeroMexico is neotiating with Airbus for the replacement of 15 DC9's.

What do you guys think? I thought that Mexicana will go all Airbus and AeroMexico all Boeing. But this was a surprise!
We know that Airbus is replacing Mexicana's B722's and maybe CINTRA will get a better deal for a big purchase of A319's and A318's?
I was doing some search and found that Mexicana still holds 8 firm options for the A320 family.

I thought that CINTRA was going away and that Mexicana and AeroMexico were going to finally be competitors rather than conjoined twins...

In any case, this is good news: they need to do something, and after my flights on A320s last week, I'm pretty convinced that they're a very competitive product (not that the 737NG is not)...

Interesting, but we hear nearly every month something new: first it was the 717, than the 737NG and now Airbus. For me its clear that an airline is in talks with every manufacturer when they need a new aircraft.
At the end it depends on the price.....we will see.
The price must be very,very, good if you will change an all Boeing/MDC fleet to an all Airbus fleet.

737NGs And 717s Too

I totally agree with 717fan, AeroMexico is considering all the options they have for DC-9 equipment replacement, could be the A320 family, the 737NG family or the 717. For some reason, the Reforma newspaper only mentioned about Airbus.

AeroMexico's President, Alfonso Pasquel, clearly said in a conference two weeks ago that the 737NG was THE choice.

In another statement I heard that they want to replace the DC-9's first with MD-80/87's and in a few years (when traffic and money comes back) they will order new aircraft.

Well, they seem to be getting a lot of leased MD-80s, specifically a lot of MD-87s in the last few months, so I guess 717fan may be right. When you think about it, they must have quite an eclectic fleet of MD-80s, with different engines, configurations, etc. I wonder how they manage to keep them all in good condition and what the pilots think about this. . .

Flashmeister: I do not mean to start an A vs B war. I just think it's unfair to Boeing when Airbus does this. Boeing should not be suffering just because the European governments are handing Airbus loads of money. Does anyone agree with me?

Today, Reforma´s newspaper on its business section says that AM´s board members adviced about how costly would be for AM to replace - the DC-9 with brand new Airbus aircraft. After decades of been a Boeing customer, they would have to spend huge money on crew training, etc.

My guess is that AM will go for the 717, I´m not pretty sure that they´ll go for either the 318 or 319 those are great for MX

Now you guys can see how decisions are taken in Mexico. If CINTRA's board of directors wants AM to get those Airbus, AM will get them no matter what AM's directors and managers say.

If you take a look at CINTRA's board of directors, they don't know anything about the airline industry, they just know that they can get a very big discount for purchasing the Airbus but they don't care about the costs they will have on training pilots, maintenance people, flight attendants, etc. They know they will sell the airline and that is it.

The words of some of you come to my mind when we discussed the topic of what will mexican airlines be with aviation enthusiasts directing them...

Sorry for not replying before, but I had to go to Monterrey and San Antonio. By the way, conditions for aviation photography were excellent in Monterrey I saw lots of presidential aircrafts, some in MTY (Mariano Escobedo) and some in the Aeropuerto Internacional del Norte which I thought was the militar airport of Monterrey but it is also the private aviation airport.

The 8 orders that holds MX are the other 319s expecting them all this year. This far they got 4, they´re missing 8 for a total of 12. I think for now MX that will be all the new expectations for this year. Maybe more B757s...

About the MD-87 those are a very nice arcft in my option, AM basiclly know that are aircraft built around 10 years ago... they have a better cockpit technology/systems than the MD82, built 20 years ago.

AeroMexico, this far, I was told from a friend that works in AeroMexico´s home manteinance at Mex, they told all the personal and areas in the hangar that they will be expecting for 25 aircraft. The idea they got on mind is to "replace" and have a fleet "renew" at the same time.

He told me, most of them think the aircraft in lease first will be B717 for all DC9 replacement... and some B737-8 for MD82s.

XA-AMC XA-DEL N1003P
XA-AMD XA-DEM

15 DC9s + 10 MD82s give a total of the 25 aircraft waiting for.

Hey and Rumors about the B777s is still strong.. they told me both acft were going to be lease from Air France but the problem was that AM doesn´t want the GE90-94B instead of General Electric they prefer PW4090 or PW4098. So let´s see also in what concludes the B777. If they decide to get them in 4 or 5 months we will see them in AM.
