JAT Has Applied To Fly Belgrade-Chicago

Thu Mar 21, 2002 7:33 am

In FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE 19-25 March 2002

"JAT PLANS INTERNAL SHAKE-UP TO PREPARE FOR PRIVATISATION"

"JAT Yugoslav Airlines will undergo a complete restructuring this year in a bid to break even in preparation for eventual privatisation.
JAT will be restructured in all aspects from "technical to its organisation and ownership structure!" says Ljiljana Stepanovic, deputy manager planning and evelopment. ...

... JAT is predicted to carry 1.02 million passengers this year, down 2% from last year's 1.04 million, with domestic traffic expected to decrease by 26%.

The airline is looking to resume services to the USA and has applied to the Department of Transportation to operate between Belgrade and Chicago. Last year the airline applied to resume Belgrade-New York services, which were suspended in 1992 when the USA placed sanctions on the country. A decision has yet to be made, but last week the carrier amended its application to add twice weekly DC-10-30 services to Chicago via New York. JAT predicts US services could generate net revenues of 1.4$ million in the first year of operation. The airline eventually aims to resume services to Australia and Canada.

Serbia's assistant minister for traffic and telecommunications, Dragoljub Trgovcevic, says JAT and the government have agreed with Airbus to delay the airline's A319 deliveries for a further two to three years, but says the deal is still "inadequate for JAT" and negotiations are continuing to revise the aircraft mix. The previous Serbian governemnt ordered eight a319s in 1997 when US aircraft were unavailable due to trade sanctions"

Its nice to hear that JAT is willing to resume flights to North America. It would really boost the airlines status if it was to resume its trans-Atlantic service, which in any case is in demand for the Serbian-Montenegrin market. However it seems to take the US Transport ministry far too much time regarding the 'decision.' Perhaps this reflects great inefficiency on their part!

It will be a welcome site to see JAT as a regular visitor at JFK, ORD, YYZ, and YUL. Who knows how long the DC10 will be with JAT, though i have to see i like them very much!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It would be nice to see a JAT D10 in YYZ, but unlikely. Ther are far more Croat-Canadians than Serb-Canadians. The JAT charters and skeds from YYZ-ZAG-BEL picked up 80% of their pax in ZAG. Indeed, AC flew to ZAG from YYZ, but never BEL. I can remember many Croats friends saying they hating flying JAT since all the FA's were Serbs but all the pax were Croats from YYZ-ZAG.

YYZ (and YUL, ORD, JFK) are more likely to see Croatia Airlines, if & when they start TA service. There are more Croats in North America than Serbs and Croatia has a much higher PCI than Serbia.

Yyz717,
You are not making any sense. First of all what indications do you have that support your idea of the number of Serbs and Montenegrins living in Canada? And where does you statistic of 80% come from? Are you saying that there were no regular BEG departures for Canada?

That last bit of blunder really was not needed.

In any case we will see who flies to Canada and USA, and who doesnt.  Smile

JAT Has Received Approval For New York Flights!

Sat Mar 23, 2002 9:41 pm

www.justplanes.com

Friday 22 March 2002

"JAT - Filed an application with DOT to start Belgrade-New York JFK-Chicago O'Hare service.
JAT already received approval for twice a week DC10 service from Belgrade to New York JFK."

Very interesting news, anybody knows when will JAT start this service? This summer? I hope so...

Yyz717,

This may have been true in the 1980s, and I repeat may have been, I don't know and I don't want to argue. But you must remember that between about 1990 and now almost 1 million Serbs immigrated to Canada, most to Toronto. A lot of them go back home at some point between June and September. Certainly 3/4 of those would take advantage of a YYZ-BEG flight, don't you think?

Sadly, there's almost as many Serbs in Western Europe an North America as there is in Serbia itself...

I hope they' ll lease, or even buy a couple of 762s or A330s to service these destinations. DC10 is too old, too expensive to operate and probably doesn't have all the necessary equipment to get the licences from FAA...They'd be better of selling that a/c to FedEx or Aeroflot, as previously discussed, than keeping the old bird. Not that I have anything against DC10s, but, when you add the numbers, it's just cheaper this way...
If I was i their shoes, I'd beef up the European services for another year or two, start making some dough, privatize the company, and then start thinking about transatlantic services. The market is there, undoubtly, but I'm not sure whether Jat can pull this one. NYC, Chicago and Toronto can fill up those planes any given day, we're talking hundreds of thousands of Serbs living in these three cities, majority of which would pay say $150 more than to someone else just to fly straight to Belgrade. I know I would...

There are NOT 1M Serbs in Canada. To suggest that 1M Serbs emigrated to Canada betw 1990 and 2002 is ludicrous. That would mean about 85k/year which would mean that about 40% of total immigration to Canada was Serb! Nonsense.

Sobelair,
thanks for your information regarding the latest developments.

There are nearly 2 million Serbs living in the diaspora, most living in Germany. Larger Serbian populations also exist in Canada, USA, Australia, Switzerland, France, England, and Sweden. Looking at the predominant areas of Serbian population for North America, can be broken down to a few cities.

USA: Most predominant is probably Chicago, followed by New York. It is very apparent that many Serbs have also migrated to the Californian Silicon Valley and Dallas.

CANADA: Upon their arrival to Canada, majority were sent to Quebec (Sherbrooke, Montreal, Gatineau), however most quickly relocated to the greater Toronto area due to realistic economic prospects. As a result most Serbs residing in Canada live in Toronto, while there are significatly smaller communities in Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver.

Close2lax,
I am not informed whether the DC10 is an economical aircraft, however i think the airline would favor keeping the DC10 in operation until more favorable economic conditions allow for the purchase of newer wide-body aircraft. Last years plan of leasing two B767s was an excellent idea, however the incidents from 9/11 certainly stalled any effort in resuming the services to North America until recently.

Flying the DC10 last summer twice between BEG and CDG, i certainly wouldnt mind flying on the same aircraft on a trans-Atlantic flight. Flight entertainment should be adequate, since the aircraft is equipped with personal audio entertainment as well as the big screen for every third subdivision. Legroom was standard, as is the case with AF and AC widebodies.

BTW JATs summer flight schedule should become available by mid April.

Yyz717,
I would estimate about 200.000 to 250.000 Serbs living in Canada.

I agree JU101...your estimate seems reasonable. Just under 1% of total Canadian population.

I'm sorry, I phrased that poorly, I meant of all the 1 Million or so that immigrated from Serbia to everywhere in the world, a proportionately large number live in Toronto. I would agree that it is between 200 000 and 250 000.
