FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

***********************************
NOTE: The data update was late and contained some data errors with places like GUM and SJU that are U.S., but not in the 50 States. I attempted to remove all those records. I will probably restate this when the data is corrected from OAG.

Interesting to see DL completely kicked off LAX-AMS. Really surprised there is no additional KLM frequency. Must not be that big of a market.

Indeed odd that DL is ending AMS service on its own metal, KLM is the only other carrier that serves the route, whereas CDG has multiple carriers.

UA has always been 4-5 frequency on ORD-IAD. There’s not a ton of connecting traffic and a lot of the local traffic goes to DCA.

With DL and AMS at LAX, it seems they're going the UA route when they pulled out from SAL-LAX many years ago and seeded it to its partner TA/AV.

Indeed odd that DL is ending AMS service on its own metal, KLM is the only other carrier that serves the route, whereas CDG has multiple carriers.

Agree with you. AMS is a good airport for connections - much easier than CDG.

It seems to me that DL is getting more and more reliant on their partners for flights like LAX-AMS. But like others have said, it just could be too much capacity. KL does have two dailies on the LAX-AMS route. DL could be trying to send more pax through the Pacific Northwest (SEA and PDX), but that's a long shot.

As far as AA leaving the SEA-JFK market, I think they just lost out. There is still DL, B6 and AS...plenty of capacity to JFK from SEA.

There was an article on Crankyflyer last week about AA reductions at JFK. Most are due to runway work and they got a waiver from the PA to park the slots during the project. I am sure they got the same with the MAX reductions or they were during the day before the slot restrictions begin.

KL has two flights only for the summer.
DL moved the timing for the AMS flight from the afternoon slot (1:30 PM) to the evening slot (7 PM). That is not a good time for onward international connections at AMS. Maybe that is why it may not be doing well.
The CDG flight is still departs around noon facilitating connections at CDG.

It's been that way for as long as I can remember and it's always surprised me, especially since AA doesn't serve the route. I recall in the mid-late 90s, UA had those 5 daily frequencies usually with a few DC-10s and a 777. So, the capacity is even lower today than it was 20 years ago.

They only fly IAD-ORD 5X????? That's shockingly low for hub to hub.

AA has cut drastically. Runway construction is just an excuse.

AA for July is down 30.4% on departures July 2019 vs July 2018. B6 is +1.2%. DL is +3.3%. So the runway construction only impacts AA? LOL

The AA PHL-SAT reduction isn't that much of a surprise with F9 a pretty consistent mainstay.

What sparked the AC cuts? Max cuts? Didn't they just announce a number of YYZ frequency increases 4-6 weeks ago.

AAs cuts have two reasons, one and the main reason is that they are doing runway construction at JFK and the second reason is the 7M8 grounding, they are now cxling up to 115 flights per day, all these routes will be back post-runway construction and whenever Boeing decides to get that fix out there, they announced this in a few different places and as of today, AA has removed the MAX from the schedule till 8/19/19... I hope to god they fix it before then

Could AA be preparing to dehub JFK??? Honestly, AA should trade slots with DL to consolidate their hub to LGA.

Sure it's an excuse in as much as JFK has clearly been their weakest hub for a very long time, and it is telling that they aren't cutting flights in DFW and CLT, but in this instance they did get lucky when they could draw down a lot of flying and not lose their slots as the PA was happy for fewer flights clogging things up when they're down a runway.

yes, JFK runway construction gave AA a great excuse to park slots and not loose money over the summer break.

I'm sure B6/DL are ecstatic that AA basically cut SAN/SEA completely during peak summer season. Has to be great for yields.

Interesting slot swap

I think MCO is to cover some of that capacity from AA cutting JFK-MCO. My theory on TPA is that WN is performing horribly on that route, so NK thinks adding some capacity will be able to push WN off. If I were NK, I'd try LGA-MSY also. WN would get killed on it.

wow, I'm sure B6 is excited about this. Maybe they can make the second FLL-UIO frequency last for rest of the year. As discussed in JetBlue thread, B6 is coming after LA's JFK routes too.

a lot of B6 cuts here for Sep/Oct. Must be a bad earning call coming up that's getting them to do this. At least they are adding more capacity on JFK-MCO to make up for the AA cuts.

What this means is that JFK is no longer highly profitable for AA, except as a O&D market. One thing we know is that AA crunches the numbers before it does anything. We can lament this, cry about it, post incessantly on this board...but the fact of the matter is that there are other more profitable routes to use the planes.

And thank you so much for posting the changes every week...it is definitely appreciated.

Wow, I wonder if they will close stations? I wouldn't be surprised. If those planes will be grounded that long it will be enormous work to make them airworthy again.

OK, but why isn't anybody else cutting flights? Let's be honest here. AA cut them because they sucked. I don't see why they would come back. Of course, AA doesn't want to give the slots away. This deal allows them to hold the slots while they figure out whether to sell them I suspect. Sure some of these cuts will come back, but they are down 30% YOY at JFK. I'd say less than half of that comes back.

Wasn’t it established that JFK cuts were mainly runway construction?

AA has cut drastically. Runway construction is just an excuse.

AA for July is down 30.4% on departures July 2019 vs July 2018. B6 is +1.2%. DL is +3.3%. So the runway construction only impacts AA? LOL

It has been discussed in other threads that the slot requirements are waived during the runway reconstruction *and* that post-reconstruction, AA will be above where it was earlier this year.

Do we know that the DL/AMS cut is not just seasonal? ....as that's often the way that a second LAX-AMS frequency has gone over the years.

Nothing all that odd about that; CDG is a much larger O&D market from LAX, and can accommodate transfer traffic just as easily (albeit not as efficiently IMO).

No they just choose to use the slot exemptions DL B6 has Not.
American Airlines is shrinking in JFK that is a fact however Some of it is temporary and will coming back is also a fact.

The plan is for JFK to be mainly OD not connecting but business OD oriented. PHl is the European gateway. This is old news. I don’t like there decision but it’s been clearly broadcast and consistent. Now we’ve been told by AA that some of these cuts are temporary and will be coming back and we can even see it in the schedule. Some that don’t like there call at JFK are just pew pewing.

Well put.

Very true, it just seems odd that a large O&D market like Los Angeles can't make AMS work on both DL and KL. But then again, there is a plethora of competition to connecting hubs in the LAX market, so perhaps DL would be better off shifting that AMS frequency elsewhere in its network and letting KL handle all the demand there.

I'm not sure what DL would gain in a slot exchange with AA. DL has a much larger network from both JFK and LGA than AA does. Delta would basically be giving away assets to AA at LGA and they wouldn't gain much at JFK, if not anything at all. Outside of EZE, all of American's remaining intercontinental destinations at Kennedy are already served by DL.

Point being, DL would not take such an offer. There would be more for them to lose than gain.

My mistake you are correct. That actually makes the PHL-SAT cut surprising. They've been flying it with a 320 since the start of the service. If it warranted that capacity yet is being cut due the max issues, they could have dropped it to a 190 and maintained daily service.

Maybe not via a slot swap... but, these kinds of flight cancellations haven’t occurred at an airline hub since CLE and CVG were dehubbed. It’s now the smallest AA hub, and it is smaller than CLE and CVG before they were dehubbed.

Re AA at JFK

Someone should send me an award as I called this!

I will make another call, most of this stuff is never coming back.

They are ToAAst at JFK.

1. Most of these markets bleed money for them

2. They will use this as a test to see how intl and business contracts hold up while these routes are gone

3. They will see how LGA holds up with a reduced JFK

Long story short, look for hubs, partner hubs and SFO going forward. Heck, they will almost be there this summer

The cuts were occurring long before the max grounding and the runway work hasn’t caused any of the 70 other airlines at the airport to cut one flight.

That well-placed story about ramping up in November was a load of bull.

there are three or four suitors for American slots at JFK

1. UA. But this is limited. Maybe 20 slots.

2. WN. For obvious reasons they probably want to expand New York and this may be their last large opportunity to do it without buying B6

3. B6. They probably don’t want many more but they will take them if they are available at the right price. If nothing else for their new European service and feed for those flights

4. DL. I think they don’t want anymore slots, but would take them to prevent JetBlue from getting any more.

I think there will probably be a transaction over the next year.

AA has entered the death spiral at JFK...Something has to give. It’s not like LaGuardia; they can’t slot squat with props and RJs

Why would B6 not want anymore slots? It seems like they are short on well timed slots, especially in summer time, which is why they run all these odd hour flights. Would AA be willing to sell to UA though?

I would imagine it would be a huge mistake for B6 to allow WN or another LCC into JFK.

Could AA be preparing to dehub JFK??? Honestly, AA should trade slots with DL to consolidate their hub to LGA.

I was hoping to nip this one in the bud before we went too far down that track, but I think I was unsuccessful. It seems the JFK cuts are tied to runway construction. According to Crankyflier, AA is building up JFK in the fall:
https://crankyflier.com/2019/04/09/after-a-dramatic-summer-pullback-american-builds-up-in-new-york-this-fall/
But if you thought that this pulldown was going to be permanent, it’s not. Starting on November 21 when the construction is done, American is ramping up above where it was before.

...a lot of the build-up is in hub markets. Those are about providing connectivity throughout the network. Further, unaffected by this pulldown and ramp up are American’s flights to primary business centers like LA, London, and Sao Paulo. American will continue to serve those routes since it’s important from a network perspective.

But the rest of the service is in smaller spokes where American has a decent local presence. And that confirms to me what I’ve always thought was American’s plan post-merger. These schedules are about New York as a destination, not as an origin.

So it appears AA will be end up bigger than it it was before the cutbacks when the dust settles, although the building up is to key markets and hubs.

I hate to see AA shrink at JFK, I used to love connecting through T8 going to Europe. But I disagree with AA's shrinking as them failing at JFK. It's a forfeiture in favor of a far more profitable and less competitive PHL. Running two European gateways 100 miles apart is revenue suicide. JFK's purpose for AA has transitioned to focusing solely on O/D. Without the US/AA merger we most likely would've seen large international growth at JFK for AA like we've seen at PHL.

There are a few more domestic nonstop routes such as JFK-CLE, JFK-DFW, JFK-MSP, and JFK-BNA that could be added by B6 out of JFK if B6 can acquire extra slots at JFK.

AUS, PHX, OAK, and SAN are the only WN destinations outside of the LGA perimeter that currently have nonstop service out of EWR on WN. There are a few other WN destinations outside of the LGA perimeter such as LAS, LAX, SMF, and SAT that WN could add nonstop service to out of EWR if the demand is there.

MCI, MKE, and STL currently have no nonstop service out of JFK on any airline, but WN and DL both already serve MCI, MKE, and STL nonstop from LGA. AA also serves STL nonstop from LGA in addition to DL and WN.

There is also no real need for WN to serve JFK since WN already has nonstop service out of LGA or EWR to the destinations that WN would be serving nonstop from JFK. WN could also add nonstop service to EWR from ATL, DAL, MCI, and MKE if there is enough additional demand to NYC from ATL, DAL, MCI, and MKE on WN.

WN cant add at LGA (slots) or EWR (gates)

They would be very interested in 20 or 30 slots at any NY airport
