LH 447 diverted to KEF

Mon Apr 15, 2019 6:49 am

Just saw that LH 447 DEN-FRA was diverted to KEF, I assume it is a medical issue.

Hi, just wondering if there is any specific reason to divert to KEF?
Seeing the flight path, it would look logical to continue to Ireland (SNN, DUB), which is more in the direction and does not look further away than KEF.
Or is there more 'space' to accommodate diversions at KEF than at SNN/DUB?
May seem a stupid question, but I'm just curious...

SNN and DUB would be 700-800 nm further. Around 1-1.5 hrs more flight time.

KEF was probably significantly closer. Eyeballing the map on FR24 can be misleading as the map projection used there gets very distorted at higher latitudes.

zeke, hvusslax,
thanks, makes it clear. Knew there would be an obvious reason for choosing KEF, and now I know why :)
Comparing distances on a map is indeed very different than the reality, did not know it's that different...
