MAS Update

Fri Mar 22, 2002 5:29 pm

well, I heard about that Vienna comes back in their network. ZRH will be turn-around again and FCO via VIE to KUL. Sounds interessting but I would like to talk with the guy responsible for closing a whole office and a few month later they open a new one...

So they changed the plans again?
Do they know what they want?

MH still wants to fly 3 times with B744 to Züri?

Züri (ZRH) will be serves only for two month with 744 (April and May). From June ZRH will be served again with 772. As far as I know 3 times weekly.

Any updates of the EZE, CHC and other plans?

EZE will be flying from May 1, 2002 I think. They are just planning to fly to Christchurch, NZ as well as Chengdu and Kunming in China. I think the destinations in China will be given the priority first. They are still flying 3 times weekly into Zurich.

Swissgabe: Are you sure about Vienna? They suspended the services last year. Maybe they find that they still have potential at Vienna. Austrian Airlines flight to KUL are making heaps of profit with them, maybe that's why they are flying back to Vienna.

So will the Zurich service become a turnaround service again and using the B747? Looks like Zurich needs more capacity that it had initially thought. Are they planning to start trans-Atlantic services from Zurich or is it too late to change their stopover city from KUL to Newark via Zurich instead of Dubai.

Regards.

MAS could fill the void left by Air NZ cutting their CHC-SIN route. After all SIN is just a transit point for most of the good coming from the South Island. KUL could play that role perfectly too.

ZRH will be served 3 times daily as turnaround as the informations I got. I don't believe about a MAS Atlantic flight our of ZRH at the moment and they have never been thinking about this possibility at ZRH.

I don't think that OS makes money on the VIE-KUL sector. Don't ask me why they fly there, maybe its cheap to stop there on the way to down under. But there is not a lot of traffic for them between Austria and KL but there is to mention that Lauda/OS are offering best connections from many MAS offline stations as Geneva to KL.

Swissgabe: I think it's 3 times weekly! Hehehe...Anyway, I just wish they could start a trans-Atlantic services from Europe instead of Dubai. I doubt they will make money on the DXB-EWR route, especially in the tense political situations between these two regions. They have a very liberal air agreement with the Swiss Governement, which I think they should make use of! Maybe they are planning to code-share with Swiss again? We shall have to wait till March 26 to see!

OS is making money at KUL because they are not only counting on the Europe-KUL market, as well as the KUL-Australia market. Both market are very good for Austrian. OS offers the cheapest airfare from London to KUL, if you do not want to travel with Middle Eastern airlines. That's because there's only 2 European carriers at KUL, namely Austrian and the other being KLM. While there are loads of tourist from Europe wanting to fly to Malaysia, but they can't because due to lack of air services. take Paris for example, MAS fills almost every single flight out of CDG. With KLM and OS, they could help to bring French tourist into KUL. Plus, if ytou want a seat from London to KUL somewhere in June with OS, it's quite impossible to find any seats available.

Another thing is that KUL have very cheap landing fees. They ferry a lot of passengers on the Kangaroo route as well. With the cheap landing fees, they could well increase their yield.

As far as Egypt air is concerned, their KUL-SYD-KUL flight sector did not show up on their timetable as of yet. Did they have the rights to fly this route, coz if they don't it would be really stupid of them to fly via KUL instead of via SIN where they get fifth freedom rights at SIN. Egyptair is also another airline that is taking the advantage of KUL's cheap landing fees when they are flying to Australia is concerned!

regards.
