Air Canada suspends YYZ-DEL June/July 2019

Thu May 23, 2019 5:30 pm

I did a search, couldn't find anything posted on this yet.

According to Airlineroute - Air Canada is suspending Toronto - Delhi service from June 15 to July 31 2019. This seems like a very close-in suspension. Anyone know the reasons? Anything to do with Pakistani airspace?

I flew on the DEL -YVR flight back in March 4th 2019 and the Pakistan/India conflict really did a number on AC's flight schedule to India. We had to stop in Copenhagen to re-fuel before heading to YVR. The aircraft (787) and the inflight staff were excellent...kudos to them.
But the airline did not provide extra catering to compensate for the three hour delay on the tarmac at Kastrup. Obviously, we could not get off the plane so we sat there until the refueling and crew change. A number of passengers walked up to Business and actively complained to departing and arriving crew about the situation. Are there not new CDN passenger regulations coming into effect that address such issues? Is this type of delay too short to meet the criteria?

I thought that I read that Pakistani airspace is again open to flights going into India.

Regardless this frees up 2 B789s during the peak summer period of June-July which is good as demand to DEL dips overall during this period versus the winter from North America. Their daily DEL service is still maintained with the YVR-DEL flight so it’s not all that bad.

AC can now use the 2 B789s during the peak summer season on more higher yielding and profitable services to Europe and California.

A portion of South-Western Pakistan is partially opened, of which must be entered from the Arabian Sea from a Westbound perspective, since the airspace on the Gujarat-Sindh border (of India/Pakistan) is closed. This is still a significant diversion for ULH flights from Delhi and thus flights still have to make a stop in Europe.

Took the DEL-YYZ flight a couple weeks ago in J. It is now non-stop and does fly through a bit of the southern edge of Pakistan, but still has to fly SW out of India into the Arabic Sea and turn west over Pakistan and into Iran. Flight time was 15h and 40m. Great plane (the J Class seat is pretty good), good crew. Catering leaves a bit to be desired.

Any plan to up-gauge YVR-DEL, which is better timed for connecting traffic to India as a red-eye? (This arrives in the early morning and departs after sunrise.) As for where two additional B789 flights could go...one could go to a transcon like YYZ-LAX or YVR-EWR (to make that a daily B789 instead of a B788/B789 mix).

Shortage of aircraft (due MAX situation), seasonal lessening of demand to India.

It's the pre-monsoon period in northern India so that means extreme heat (Delhi is forecast to reach 43 degrees today!!!)

Once the monsoon hits it's game over for traffic to India. It doesn't pick up again until just before the Dilwali festival (mid-October)
