Tu-154 And Yak-40/42 Operations In Iran

Sun Mar 24, 2002 7:37 am

I am planning a trip to Iran in May in the hope of flying lots and lots of Tupolevs and Yaks there.

Can anyone tell me what the situation is with their airports for things like ramp access / viewing areas etc? I'm most interested in Kish Island, Tehran, Esfahan and Shiraz.

Unfortunately the Kish Air www site doesn't list any e-mail addresses and the other Tu/Yak operators don't have working sites either. Does anyone know of any e-mail contact addresses for any operator (Mahan, Kish, Asseman, IAT, Caspian etc)?

I've also heard that it is very difficult to get seats on internal flights unless they are booked months in advance. Is that true? maybe it's just travel agent's propaganda to get you to pay over the odds. They tell you the same BS about travel in Russia.

Any information is appreciated.

Howdy Ben

I have some of the details here for some of the Iranian airlines. I will email them thru to you on Monday or Tuesday.

Just in short though:

* Iran Aseman isn't operating any Soviet aircraft, so you may want to give them a miss
* Interesting to note that Kish Air is no longer operating the Yak-40 (according to their website) but instead 4 F50s. Will email you with Capt Rezvani's email address (He is the Exec. Officer from memory)
* I know that Mahan Air has 1 Tu-154M, but where they are flying it to, I am not sure. Try their German website at: Will give you other emails as well
* IAT has a website at

Will email you privately with more information anyway.

I was under the impression that most russian aircraft had been banned in Iran due to the recent crashes, especially the Yak-40/42. Can you clarify this?

I was in Kish this past summer, i went with both Aseman and Iran Air. In the past i flew in a a russian jet when going to Mashad, that was the worst airplane experience in my life, thank god it was a short flight. You really dont need to book in advance unless you want to fly with Iran Air, even then only Kish Island is usually booked in the summer season and only with Iran Air. email me for further ?'s

After the Iran Air Tours Tu-154 crash, the Iranian Aviation Minister released a statement that Soviet built aircraft would be retired from the Iranian airlines. The language of his statement seemed to indicate that it was going to be effective immediately (or ASAP), but if you look at the fleet composition of the various airlines, especially Kish Air, Caspian Airlines and Iran Air Tours, you will notice that these aircraft operate almost an exclusive fleet of Tu-154Ms; and late model Tu-154Ms at that. Given that these airlines would not be able to find suitable replacements (i.e. cost and availability [sanctions]), it is obvious that these aircraft will stay in operation for sometime yet.

However, in late February it was announced that Iran was going to order the Tu-204 and Tu-334 to replace the "Soviet" builds in the fleets of the various airlines.

I have emailed you 2 or 3 times to your hotmail account. Can you please email me on from a different account, or try again on the hotmail account. I think it is likely that my emails didn't make it thru to you?
