How Do The Rumors Get Started?

Mon Mar 25, 2002 3:12 am

I'm sure we all remember posts that say that things are going to happen, but never do.. Like the 717 program ending, etc etc.. How do rumors like these get started? And WHERE do they get started? I know that so many aviation rumors are going around, but they are not likely to happen anytime soon, if ever.. Do the high-ups at the airlines start them, or is it usually disgruntled employees or just pranksters? I'm sure we'd like to know..

I think we are very impatient people and when accurate information does not come our way fast enough we begin to speculate what might happen. Then someone else misinterprets our speculation and before you know it our ideas become insider information from a reliable source. Also, airline employees are in a very shaky, turbulent business and tend to start and perpetuate rumors out of fear (mergers, white-knights, growth plans, etc.). That's been my experience anyway.
I work for Southwest, but the views expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Southwest.

Hey, did ya'll know American Eagle is going to buy 100 A380s? They're gonna fly them from Sioux City, IA to Perth, Australia!

Stupid rumors like the above get started by idiots with, as Nonrevman said, wishful thinking or people who think its fun to mess with people's minds...

Viable rumors get started by people who see that something could work, so they beleive it will...

I started them..

Seriously though, its people that say stuff like 'why don't Airline X fly to Airport B from Airport A', then someone thinks they are actually going to fly that route, and posts about it, just because of that (how lame).

Was it just me or did I actually hear Phil Condit of Boeing say that the reason Boeing was moving their headquarters was because of a-

"consistently dissapointing and below average workforce."

Anyone else hear this? It was run ONCE but never made it to the papers in SEA.

Rumors? Or true.

Like this......

ATA is to buy AirTran once the ATA pilot contract is settled. ATA has been looking at a hub in ATL for a while and increasing their east coast presence. ATA is also interested in the 717 to upgrade service to Des Moines and Indy out of MDW. The 717s will also be used to add service to STL, DTW, CLE, CVG, MCI, and OMA out of MDW..........

Now if someone else reads and post this somewhere else, then you have it...a birth of a rumor!!!  Smile

How about this: IAM 141 will reject any contract that doesn't include a 25% pay hike.

Rumor yes because it is what the vast majority of the CSR at one station said they would do, but not nessasally what they all will do. Alot of people post thier opinions as if they where facts.

I can relate one that I thought was kind of funny. . .

A while back, a rumor started at the Everett Boeing plant that Delta was so unhappy with the quality of Boeing's paint jobs that they were not allowing Boeing to paint anymore of their aircraft - they would all be done by outside contractors or Delta themselves. If you asked anyone who worked there, they'd tell you this.

The source? Boeing delivered a 777 to the airline unpainted at Delta's request. Why? Because they were introducing their new livery, and wanted it to be kept a secret. So when the plane was delivered unpainted - BINGO - new rumor.

It's really amazing!

Of course, some rumors end up being true. For instance, I knew before they were officially announced that JAL, ANA and AF were ordering the 777LR. I also heard rumors (later they were, for the most part, substantiated) that QF, ANZ and EK were also all very close to signing for the planes, but changed their minds or delayed their decisions at the last minute.

I dont know about how this rumour got started, but it was printed in Aircraft & Aerospace (one of the leading aviation mags in Australia) in an issue in 1990. It was about Air New Zealand having a tough time and the journalist wrote...
"The poor performing Frankfurt service has ended, and the London-Los Angeles sector has been handed over to British Airways"

What a load of bollocks! I'd like to know how on earth this journalist got hold of such nonsense, and then managed to have an article about it printed. Frankfurt lasted another ten years, and the LAX-LON route is doing well!

I normally hear rumors from staff working in a airline or from management staff from the airport.

I was told by someone close to QR that they will order the A330-200 and the A380 I took that as a rumour because nothing official was made. About 3 months later the order was announced and the rumours became true.
Also once on a flight someone (a pax. and not an F/A) told me that QR would start services to more north african destination. So I thought that Casablance will be the most logical choice. And then about 6 weeks later QR anounced direct flights to Casablanca.

This is how a rumour gets started for me, and most of the time it turns out correct.
