China Airlines Orders Up To 16 A330-300

Mon Mar 25, 2002 6:20 am

China Airlines has decided to order up to 16 Airbus A330-300 this year for it's Asian regional fleet (A300) replacement. The deal will cost around USD$1.5-2 billion.

CI official only told the media that they're always looking at the aircraft (A330), but not yet decide when to order it. The A330 order is because it has A340 in its fleet.

The order probably include 8 firm orders, with up 12-16 if options included. Airbus has promised CI for attractive price.

CI was under pressure for the new order from Boeing, who asked Taiwanese Government for help. However, CI has promised that in the future freighter order, they'll order more B747-400F, and as for the super long-haul fleet, it'll consider Boeing's product first.

777236ER,

Its even better then the A343 for that !!. At least they use open taiways for takeoff !. You know unlike other carriers that dont even use an OPEN taxiway for takeoff !!. Whats more CI dont blame the airport for their mistakes !!

I don't think Boeing stands a chance since CI already is flying the A340 for long haul flights.

I think that shows B777 might still have the chance for super long-haul route.

May be 747-400QXLR?

Let's wait until the official order is announced. We have heard Taiwanese airlines having changed their minds way too many times. CI and BR announced LoIs for the B777 in the mid-90s. Then BR changed their mind and signed an LoI for the A340. Then CI ordered 7 A343s and 1 A333. Then BR ordered the B777. Then CI was said to have canceled the single A333 order as well as all the options. Then CI was rumored to have been offered a B777 swap but was denied by the airline. The BR was rumored to consider cancelling the B777 but was later denied by the airline. Now, CI is putting the A330 back in the plan. What a saga! It seems both airlines' fleet planning people don't really know what they want.

EVA ordered 777 is mainly because they thought the non-stop link between Taiwan and China could be launched before 2005.

This looks like impossible as Taiwan's policy is swinging back and forth. EVA is worrying about what to do with these extra plane in the future.

As for CI, it's just fleet renewal.

Chuckle chuckle...

I read the report about the incident on AWST and was amazed at how short the available taxiway was (IIRC just over 6000 ft). Fortunately it was a cold day, but CI sure showed the world that the A340 can LIFT OFF.

But seriously, I believe the A330 to be excellent for short-medium haul missions.

G.W. Bush should care more about politics rather than care about the decisions of Taiwanese airlines...it's already enough that the US force Israel to buy Boeing always...

As always Udo throughs in his two worthless .02 Euros. Do we have a press release on this order, or is this a rumor?

You don't have to pick em up, CX...  Yawn
Yes, possibly a rumour or a printing error. I'm sure they wanted to express 16 B772s...  Laugh out loud

Has anyone got the article or post where this take off from a taxi way was discussed?

So did they actually take off or was it an attempted take off?

These are the type of pilots the world does not need in the air.

Thanks for posting the article. Now we can debate the merits of China Airlines ordering either the A330 or 777. While I don't like it, I believe that the U.S. Government is going to have a say in this.
