If it hadn't have crashed, Tom Hanks (and Wilson) wouldn't have been marooned on an island...

The crash was caused by a chain of events.
First they were lost, flting through a violent storm.
Second, it was mentioned that a mislabeled container of hazardous material caught fire.
The explosion caused rapid decompression of the cabin as well as damaged the engines and maybe other control systems. Pilots lost control and plane crash.

Come to think of it if you watch the crash scene carefully, it doesn't seem like either pilot try pulling up on the control column.

Also they deviated from original course and then lost contact with Taihiti control, which is why they were never found.

BTW did one of the pilots say "Fire in #4 engine"?
If Im correct the plane was a MD-11.

Also there was a brief shot of the EICAS screen. Can anyone tell what engines were damaged? I remember seeing one gauge was yellow and two were red.

You were right about the storm. Actually, I think it was one of Fedex's A300s. That was the kind of plane they show Tom Hanks boarding when he is leaving on that trip in which he crashed.

Maybe the exterior was an A300, but the flight deck was an MD-11.  Nuts

Actually, wasn't it a cargo explosion. And they were off course for some reason. Oh, and out of contact with anyone. Obviously.

The cause of the crash in Cast Away is never clearly explained. After being rescued Tom Hanks is told that the cause was most likely related to some hazardous materials aboard the flight. They are off course trying to avoid a storm in heavy turbulence, some cargo shifts & there is an explosive decompression. I don’t recall anything said about a fire in engine #4 (no engine #4 exists on any FedEx aircraft). Tom Hanks flies on an A300 early in the movie & is seen walking toward an A300 before the crash flight. You never see Tom boarding the aircraft but the flight deck of the accident aircraft is obviously an MD-11. After the MD-11 hits the water & breaks up Tom is swimming & almost gets sucked into the still running #2 engine which is still attached to the vertical stabilizer. The crash scene isn’t the greatest but it’s not as ridiculous as it looks in the previews. Myself, after seeing the footage of the two 767’s hitting the WTC played over and over, I won’t mind if they never put another airliner crash scene in a movie.

That plane must have a hell of a range to make it from Memphis all the way to the South Pacific.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

there once was a thread on the crash and the aircraft of this movie on this board. there were many interesting infos.
having seen the crash sequence twice, although i didn´t pay close attention to the cockpit scene, i can say for a fact that the exterior shots of the aircraft floating in the water is definitively a MD-11.
in addition, i believe there´s also the flight number mentioned in the movie, which is the flight number of a real FedEx flight which originates at MEM, crosses the south pacific and i believe australia before it heads for malaysia, of course, with multiple stops. don´t hit me if i´m wrong, but i remember something like that in the thread i mentioned.

cheers
