AA Aircraft Slides Off Runway At OMA

Tue Mar 26, 2002 2:57 am

An airliner slid off the end of the runway at Eppley Airfield in Omaha, NE last night. No details on aircraft type. Among the passengers of the flight from St. Louis were 20 members of the University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team who were returning from a tournament in Florida. No one was injured in the 9:40 p.m. accident.

"The landing itself was smooth, but you could tell that the ice was having an effect," said Softball Coach Jeanne Tostenson. "It wasn't an abrupt stop."

Some flights into Eppley were canceled or diverted, authorities said.

It was an MD-83, which slid off of runway 32L. There were also 6 flights that ended up being diverted to MCI, ICT, and LNK because of the incident.

My English teacher was on a flight that was diverted to MSP and he got back into town this morning. He got to school 5 minutes after class was supposed to start!

Yeah, a few of the diverted flights didn't even come in until early this morning. Ground crews were having a hard time getting the plane out, since the snow was coming down at such a hard rate. It was almost like the scene from Airport, except no Patroni.  Smile
