Alaska 261 That Crashed

Tue Mar 26, 2002 3:24 am

First, let me apologize if this an not the forum to ask this question, but it has been bugging me for a few years now about Alaskan 261`....

I was at Church and the pastor, during his sermon, declared that during the playing of the Cockpit Voice Recorder a passenegr can be heard praying with the passengers and that several passengers were "saved" before the plane crashed. Apprently there was a minsters wife , or actually, a Pastor
on board leading these people to salvation.

I can't find anything on the net to validate or confirm this claim. I hope the Pastor wasn't using this heartbreaking event to inprove his standing, or mislead the Church.

If anybody has info regarding this please let me know.

Thanks.

The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR)will not generally pick up cabin conversations. Its microphone is usually located on the console above and between the 2 pilots, and it's purpose is to record up to 30 minutes of cockpit conversation.

The CVR tapes from 261, to my knowledge have not been released to the public, and as there were no survivors of this tragedy I would be surprised if the account was factual. More likely it is good-intentioned hearsay.

For more info on the CVR, click here.

Nothing like that is included in the CVR transcript.

However, I don't feel there's anything wrong with a Minister doing that if it did happen in a similar instance. It's his duty to bring people to Christ, not a PR stunt for the church. If a Pastor could predict when life was going to end his job would be much easier.

Cheers!

I have listened to the 261 CVR tape at least 20 times.

And I have never heard anything loike what you are talking about.

You should be able to download it at

It is disturbing to listen too.

If I'm not mistaken, it is only the AS 261 ATC tape that has been released, not the CVR.
