Dated And Poor Liveries

Tue Mar 26, 2002 9:10 am

Sorry my list is long:

The winner of the most dated livery is Ethiopean Airlines. With some minor changements/improvements though by keeping strong current elements EAL could be a true winner in airline liveries again.

ATA; fossy and tasteless
TAP Air Portugal
Alitalia
Iberia
Midwest Express
Air India
Air France
Indian Airlines
Lufthansa (minor improvements)
Aerolineas Argentinas
Qantas (boring title and fuselage)
Malaysian
PGA Portugalia
TACV Cabo Verde
Martinair
TTA
Aurigny
DenimAir
Eurowings
SN Brussels Airlines
Chech
Braathens (again)
Gemini Air Cargo (logo)
Alaska Airlines
DutchBird
Tarom
LOT Polish Airlines
Palestinian Airlines
MEA (poor performance)
Syrian
Ariana
Air Seychelles
Air Zimbabwe
SAA (just fuselage change)
Augsburg Airways
Binter
Cyprus Airways
Air Sicilian
Azzura
Swiss (inspireless)
Royal Air Maroc
TunisAir
Iraqui
Iranair
A bunch of Russian airlines
and how could I almost forget Luxair (especially the tailfin emblem)

Yes, AA's livery has been around for many years but it's such a classic look that any attempt to change it would likely be met with much criticism. Further, those shining silver birds wearing patriotic banners of red, white and blue are recognized around the world... and that's got to be worth something.

Southwests "flying beachball". This looked bad the first time I saw it and looks bad now. I guess it's better than the "baby puke" colors worn for 30 years though.

Most dated is the AA scheme. That doesn't make it bad though. I don't like it much but for the life of me I could not design any better.

As mentioned AA is a classic livery.,.. it may be adjusted slightly soon, but not somepletely redone..
Continental??? Never! thats a neat scheme...
Air France... definately... that and Air Canada must be the most boring on earth.. being a toothpaste tube and all

What do i say... most "3rd world countries" and many developed countries... Iberia springs to mind as does Alitalia.
As for Qantas?? a little boring but it makes up for it a little with the stunning shemes they have. I think they will change it when the A380 is introduced tho... pretty sure of it.

While I agree that American's scheme is definitely dated, I think it's also a good thing. You know immediately that it's an AA craft. Whereas, from a distance, CO and DL look similar. AA is distinct- the only bare metal livery in the States that I can think of off the top of my head.

I think CO's livery is very nice.

MidEx is not really dated, so much as it is boring. It was boring when it was new.
I also think NorthWest's newest livery is kinda... bad. It's not ugly, but I liked the old one better, and I think they need more of that dark green color.
Southwest will NEVER have a pretty airplane, I have come to accept it. Except the State planes and Shamus... and that bare metal Silver One.
America West is pretty bad. They look cheap- I thought they were low-fare, but have since determined otherwise. You don't "catch the spirit of the old West" by looking cheap, in my opinion.

Frontier, on the other hand, is TERRIFIC. I am only so- so on the billboard thing, it's okay, but the animal tails are so unique- no one else has different tails except British, and they are phasing out.

TWA was beautiful. As is the new USAir scheme. United's is too dark- makes my dependence on Prozac increase.

That's my opinion on the majors.

Randy

P.S.- ATA is different, and much better than the old cheesey PALM TREE motif...

You named most of my favorite liveries.
Olympic is timeless and one of the best in the world.
It sure as hell looks better than the white fuselage and painted tail look of just about all other carriers.

Change is not always good.

America West's livery is excellent. It does look rather funny on the 737s but it is still great.

Northwest has dark green???

Are you sure you don't wear sunglasses when spotting NW planes? All I've ever seen is deep red, grey and a dark blue stripe cascading towards the rear.

I don't think Korean Airlines' is outdated. I'd shudder to see them with a white fuselage (because that's what's been happening with livery changes). Their plane's look so pretty at LAX during the night time. I hope and pray they don't do an EL AL or Air Pacific on us.

The most dated liveries on my list:

Air India - they did have a new livery, but for some political reason or something - they wanted the old one back!

Ethiopian Airlines - that's dated, too.

Martinair - although I like the tail logo, they could do something with the fuselage colors other than that fat red cheatline.

Iberia - too '70s now.

Air Mauritius - you guys overlooked this one. They even painted their A340s in the same livery as the older a/c!!

Aeroflot* - for the most part, about the only thing that's changed in appearance apart from the introduction of Western aircraft is the Russian flag! If they can at least repaint the fins and engines like they did with the 737-400s, then it'd look much better.

* I'm well aware that Aeroflot did have an experimental livery on a few of its A310s. But whether due to the economic crisis or the fact that one of its A310s went down in the middle of Siberia (a pilot let his 15 year old son take the controls), Aeroflot chose to stick with its Soviet-era livery.

Man, I have to disagree on Royal Air Maroc and Korean. I see them upclose every other day, and it still takes my breath away.

I would say without a doubt, Air India. Not only is the livery old, it just looks plain old dirty. In fact, I've never seen any livery make a 747-400 look so bad, as theirs.

Hey all,
Philippine airlines need to do something. Their whole scheme is way to plain.
AA scheme is ok. I don't really like the mixed polished aluminum along with the grey composites though. That looks bad!  Nuts I think they should just paint the whole thing silver and keep everything else the way it is.
I'm not to crazy about South West's new scheme, but it sure does look better than the old one.
Anyway, have fun you all.

lots of suggestions, seems that ethiopian and air india are popular choices, and some controversy over Continental and AA.

it was also pointed out that most airlines these days are going for all white liveries. I strongly disagree. The all white was a 90's thing, over the past 5 years or so, airlines have gone for colour, such as Vietnam, China Airlines, Saudi Arabian, US Airways, United, BA, Austrian even added a cheatline. There are, understandably a few exceptions, most notably, Delta and Swiss of late, but airlines went crazy in the 90's, now a colourful, strong corporate branding is more what the airlines go for.

I really liked Air India's experimental livery that they had in 1989 for like 2 minutes. (okay, probably longer than that, 6 months??)
It gave the airline a real professional look. I was shocked that they went back to that hideous maharajah character. How on earth do they expect to be taken seriously with that image?

QF livery is quite boring(not counting the Wunala painted a/c). It hasn't really changed at all since the mid 1980's. The QF livery of the 1970's and early 1980's was more exciting to look at with the silver painted bellies on the 747 classics. The best livery was the one Impulse Airlines had(albeit only for a very short time)on their Beech 1900's and 717's- aqua blue fuselage with the cockatoo on the tail.

I am now changing my mind..Holy crap...
I think Air Indias livery is one of the nicest out!! It is very original, and i like the cheatline along the fusalage which makes the Windows really stand out. But here is the deal. I only like the currently livery on the 747 aircrafts.

AirNewZealand, you are right. The experimental livery is classes above the Maharajah one.

I also agree, the Impulse cockatoo livery was great. Sure would have been nice to be standing close to the tail of the 717 and seeing it.

If you're talking about the livery that has lasted the longest without any changes, I believe the two oldest curently are AA (the current livery was introduced in 1968 and hasn't really changed since then) and SQ (introduced at the founding of the airline in 1972 and still hasn't changed since then).

I've heard that SQ may introduce a new livery when the A380-800 is delivered in early 2006.

The Air India livery is outdated by today's standards but when it debuted in 1971 with the introduction of the airline's 747-200s it was considered fabulous beyond belief. Not only was it taken seriously, the airline's 747s were believed to offer the best inflight service around (This was before Singapore Airlines took to the skies, and the competition provided by the likes of BOAC and TWA lacking in every way). The whole Palace in the Sky idea was the airline's marketing strategy of offering Eastern hospitality with Western Modern aircraft. Of course, over the years, the 747s became less of a fascination, the airline became synonymous with Eastern mismanagement and Indian Bureaucratic curtness and the whole Palace in the Sky bit began to look like a bad curry palace in Hounslow. I think they should do away with it or perhaps update it. However, the interim all-white livery was hideous and whoever came up with the interim Air India font should be shot. It looked like a bad military carrier for a tinpot Caribbean country.
Atheism is Myth Understood.

Most dated liveries? Well, CEO of Vanguard Airlines Scott Dickson said he thinks of the 1950s whenever he sees one of the old 737-200s in the 1996-2001 livery pulling into the gate...

And Miami Air (wet-lease operator) is a just plain hideous white with green and purple stripe configuration. I'll post pics of it someday.

American's livery is old, but not dated. It's actually quite attractive when you see it taxing in the sun.

WN just can't seem to come up with a winning color combination. Ugly, ugly, ugly (as mentioned before, some of the specialty liveries were pretty cool).

At least Braniff isn't flying it's disco colors anymore. Not that they were unattractive in their day, but now the airline would be in serious trouble! One of the disadvantages to being on the cusp of fashion...

And Jet Blue needs to make their aircraft look more like their website. It's far more attractive than their planes.
Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it in summer school.

I don't think so.

jetBlue, for me anyway, wins the most modern livery HANDS DOWN!!!

In terms of how attractive the planes are, have you ever seen the new window pane livery?

You really need to see jetBlue's beautiful A320s up close to form an accurate opinion!

ANA is quite dated and needs a change as well as India Air and Olympic and it's about time Southwest changed it's as well. But I can't agree with American and Alaska, both of there liveries are great, it's hard to imagine them flying in anything else now.

Airlines don't redo their paint schemes whenever they feel like it. Its an image, a marketing image, a brand recognition. Look at the carriers that have constantly redone theirs, they are trying to make up a new image by introducing a new livery, kind of like a fresh start.

Now in some cases, the livery simply looks dated, thats another issue. Colors change, styles, change, etc. over the course of time that an airline may be using a specific paint scheme.

Honestly, who can argue about American. That livery has stood the test of time since 1968 and it has probably the strongest brand recognition of any airline around. Not only has it made it nearly 35 years, it bears the national colors, everyone knows what AA stands more, and everyone can instantly tell which in American Airlines.

This livery, obviously isn't dated if its made it this long. Carty has re-affirmed the importance of the AA and the silverbirds. They're aren't any plans for a new scheme in the works either. Obviously, they wouldn't go to the trouble to paint all of the former TWA aircraft into house colors. Changes like that would be met with an uproar, also for fear of a lackluster design like what Delta did a few years ago.

While AA won't change their current livery, I think AA ought to do a few of the planes in the older AA liveries. The Astrojet livery looks really good, and should be applied to a few more planes.

I for one would love to see an AA S80 done in the original 1936 DC-3 livery to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight.

I've always been a fan of Delta's logo, and I think the newest livery is great. BUT, what the hell is the problem with repainting the planes in a timely manner?

If you read that book by Gordon Bethune (President of Continental) he tells of how people were estimating it would take like 8 years to get the whole fleet repainted. He had them all done within a year. His point is that a consistent image is important.

This is the worst of Delta's current paint jobs, used on its ASA daughter airline:

Note To Delta: Repaint all the planes! And why did you bother repainting 727s and 737s about to be retired in the newest liveries, but leave much younger planes unpainted?
