Does BA operate scheduled 777s to CDG? or it's just a charter?

If so, why do they need such big liners when they have a flight almost every hour? and why don't thay use 763s?

I have never known this to be a 777 route, maybe this was just a rugby charter with France V England ??

I know that BA used to fly the 777 to CDG when they first aquired it. I guess it was on testing runs. But this was back in 1996.

Probably just a late a/c change. If the a/c supposed to fly the route needs maintenance and there are no substitute a/c they might put in a 777 instead.

Strange, AMS saw a BA 777 yesterday as well in stead of the usual 757 on the Heathrow route. Coincidence or a change in a/c strategy for short haul?

Might have been a rugby charter perhaps?BA did fly the 772 to CDG when they first got them for 2 main reasons I think
1)crew training
2)problems with the GE90S to do with ETOPS.

I thought the regular aircrafts on this route were more like 757 (at least that's what I flew on last fall).

Although I remember a movie shot in the 70s on which one of the character flys to London on an AF 747. At that time it seemed to me a big plane for just a short flight, but then the pilot said "our first stop will be London". So... maybe it is just a stopover...

We (BA) are short of crew on LHR eurofleet at the moment so some flights have been going on Worldwide fleet aircraft to fill in our gaps!!

On 18th March I saw a BA777 land in CDG. I was driving on road A1 just north of Paris when the plane was landing.

I have actually seen Air France 747 Classics at Heathrow more than once. As stated above, there are loads of reasons, ie last minute equipment change (A300 goes tech), lack of short-haul crew, give the aircraft a testdrive after it's been in the hangar, etc etc. I like seeing unusual aircraft subs, always interesting (ie Olympic regularly using A340s from Athens to Heathrow).

Yes, I have spotted a few European widebodies coming into LHR when I have been there: Swissair MD-11, Iberia A340, KLM 767-300 (I know it is part of KL's Eurofleet), etc. I also have a book with an Air France 747-400 taxiing in the background at LHR.

They used to operate large aircraft regularly in the pre-Eurostar days due to a great demand that is now shared with the high-speed train.

More recently they operated them during France's notorious airport strikes when they were forced to reduce flights.

Lufthansa had to use a 747-400 for the 35min flight from Frankfurt to Munich a couple of times due to aircraft shortage.

Okay... When BA uses its 777, AF its 747, KLM its 743 etc... do they use the same terminals and/or gates?! I mean AF operates the A300 to LHR T2.... but can T2 hold a 747 for ex?

T2 seems capable of handling the big jets. The AF 747s and OA A340s I've seen at LHR have all been parked at gates (not remote stands). I doubt all the gates are wide enough but it seems that quite a few are. If T2-bound aircraft had to use a remote stand it'd be a couple of miles away, there is nowhere near T2 for parking. Heathrow is the busiest international airport in the world (pax numbers) but it isn't very big. I think DFW is eight times bigger (or four times, can't remember). Basically it's shoehorned into the west London suburbs and it's creaking at the seams. But as far as I know the only remote parking is over by T4, and maybe some in the vicinity of T3.

Cedarjet,

In this thread http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/762600, the top 10 busiest airport for Jan-Nov 2001 were:

1 / ATLANTA, (ATL) / 70'134'310 / -5.3
2 / CHICAGO, (ORD) / 62'018'075 /-6.9
3 / LOS ANGELES, (LAX) / 56'723'112 / -7.4
4 / LONDON, (LHR) / 56'282'138 / -5.9
5 / TOKYO, (HND) / 54'087'804 / 4.3
6 / DALLAS, (DFW) / 50'991'685 / -9.2
7 / FRANKFURT, (FRA) / 45'396'171 / -1.2
8 / PARIS, (CDG) / 44'784'408 / .1
9 / AMSTERDAM, (AMS) / 36'931'042 / .2
10/ DENVER, (DEN) / 33'573'131 / -5.7

Perhaps you mean DFW is 4 or 8 times the size in terms of area?

Hello,

British Airways (BA) had selected CDG as one of the destinations for its newly-delivered 777-200s that were still in a proving period (until 1997). Alongside Paris, the first 777s also operated to Middle East. These flights allowed to carrier to train a few crews on the type.

Here is a photo of such a flight:

More recently, the airline has sent a few 777s or even 747-400s when it had to cancel flights (bad wheather, ATC problem, etc.). But that's very rare.

We've also had a few Concordes here, but Air France's ones are more usual  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Best regards,
