I have that movie. I bet the president won't take a trip anytime soon if he sees it! Yes, it looks like a 747-100, but I didn't know about the lav thing, and probably didn't nned to know. For added info, did you know that the movie Apollo 13 was filmed in a Boeing 720F "Vomit Comit"? It's the same aircraft that they use to train new astronauts for weightlessness. I wonder how they filmed it so well?

The engines on the "Air Force One" plane are a dead giveaway of the -100 series.

Also...from memory I noticed the cockpit was from a 747-400....it was a glass cockpit

It's A Movie!

In movies they usually don't expect the public to be able to tell the difference between things like cockpits and aircraft variations. They used a 744 for interior shots and a 741 for exterior shots. I don't know why they have to use two aircraft. Maybe the 741 had to take a break for lav service?

I thought that was one of the crappest movies ever made. The plane is too badly damaged to land, but is stable enough to fly in close formation at low speed with a propeller plane (Herc) while passengers and crew are winched across the gap? And continue this marvellous feat even after the cockpit is abandoned, but don't worry, Harrison has secured the control column with a belt. (Weirdly, the initiation of the mid-air transfer is absolutely identical to Charlton Heston's move into a midair 747 in the far-superior Gloria-Swanson-as-herself, bad 70s fashion, George Kennedy, nuns-and-all "Airport 75", frame-for-frame, angle-for-angle. Spooky.)

The reason that it is a 744 inside is that at Universal studios hoolywwod they have a replica of a 747-400 with all the proper seat that can be taken out in 5 minutes to change and the cockpit upstairs is the 744 one also.

Did anyone see the show on discovery channel about AF1 a few nights ago? That told all the secrets. It told that it WAS a repainted -100 and about how fake parts of the movie were. Like the escape pod. I never knew that much about AF1 till then.

The Solution

Fri Sep 03, 1999 12:10 am

The aircraft used and repainted is/was a Kalitta one, a B.747-146. It was seen at Los Angeles 9/96 painted as '28000' (or Air Force one) - also the tail had the bullet impacts painted on it!
But this is of course only where they used a real plane for the movie shots and doesnt interfere with above statements.
