UA 727 Still Parked At DEN

Wed Mar 27, 2002 8:34 am

Alright, I should've posted this a few weeks ago.

I was in DEN on the 9th when I noticed, upon taxiing there is a United 727 parked behind the maintenance facility north of concourse C. Its rather hidden, you can't see it from the terminal or the taxi in from Runway 8/26. I only could see it as we taxied from the west de-icing pad north, then over to Runway 8.

Its still back there, appeared flight-ready, still wearing full company colors. I thought they were all sent to the desert already. Anyone know why its still there or anything? Are their others still parked around at other airports? I know they've been out of service for nearly 5 months now.

Yes, that 727-222 has been back there since they retired the 727's. I have talked to a UA Mech and he says that that aircraft is staying there for unknown reasons.

The aircraft however is not airworthy at the moment, due to the engines are taken out of the #1 and #3 cowlings for work. He wasn't to sure what the outcome of the aircraft is going to be but he thinks since Pan Am is taking over the UA 727's, it's engines are to be serviced then re-installed. Then will most likely be handed over for Pan Am.

Hope this helps..

Hmm, thats interesting. Thanks guys. Well, I guess that means its got to be flown out of there at some point. Obviously, aircraft aren't normally stored or scrapped in DEN.

Sorry, it was too far away to get a reg. number, I didn't notice the engines being out. I was on a 727 too at the time (NW).

I also saw the UA722. Pretty wierd, I thought. For a few seconds I thought it was normal maintenance, then I remembered they were retired. Sitting in the Red Carpet Club I watched a smokey takeoff by a NW 727. Man, I miss flying in those....

Ship 7255 has been out of service for quite some time. It is currently in a non-airworthy position. It would not be worth it to fix it up to fly it to the desert, so United is just keeping it at the maintence center. Chances are it will be donated to DEN as a fire trainer or to the city of Denver.

They used to fly here regulary but in around 95 they only came in summer and winter but soon were gone due to load factors in at the end of summer 2001 lead airwisconsin to operate two 146s in the place of the one daily 27 and 146, then after sept, 11 its two crjs now! but i was luck two days ago a 146 was here and today one was here! I wish it was a 727 though because they telll you when there comign by those loud engines!

Ship 7255 is to be one of the 24 727's to go to the new Pan Am.

Oops! I confused ship 7255 with N7255U (which is ship 7155). Ship 7155 is to go to PAA. Ship 7255 (N7455U) was retired at VCV Sept-30-2001 according to Bill Harms jet census.
