Finnair Back To Daily Flight To JFK

Wed Mar 27, 2002 6:34 pm

With increased frequencies to the far east and this, I guess this could mean that AY might lease that ex CityBird MD11 after all, and probably put the leasure (charter) pax on that one, 'cause with only 4 wide bodies, this would be one tough program.

I'm glad to see NYC back to a daily though.

Demand Revives
Finnair Restores Daily New York Service

Finnair’s flights to New York revert to their daily frequency as of Sunday, March 31. After September 11, 2001, flights to New York were cut to a five-weekly frequency, with the North Atlantic over-capacity switched to Finnair’s flights to Bangkok and leisure traffic

The demand for flights to New York has returned to the level of previous years after an immediate decline last September of almost a quarter. The decline in October and November was down by as much as 37 per cent. A reverse in the decline was seen in December, when demand was down on that of December 2000 by 18 per cent.

In January 2002 a three per cent increase was already recorded, and in February sales in terms of revenue passenger kilometres were up by 4.7 per cent. Cabin factor increased to 75-80 per cent.

Finnair’s daily flights to New York leave Helsinki at 14.15 in the afternoon and arrive at New York’s JFK at 15.55 local time (until 6.4. at 14.55). Eastward flights from New York leave at 17.55 (until 6.4. at 16.55), arriving at Helsinki at 08.50 the next morning.

Finnair make a fortune carrying Russians to New York. I think they're the number one airline on the route, those MD11s have 10 abreast seating in the back and they are stuffed to the gills every flight. And most of the pax have started in Moscow / St Petersburg, the flights connect. If numbers dropped it was because Russians were staying at home, not Finns. If there is anyone here who works at Finnair I'd love to know the actual load factor on the route but a friend of mine is AY's station manager in Stockholm and he said it's close to 100%, thanks to Finland's mighty easterly neighbour.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

I do work for AY, and it's true that a very large proportion of the pax are Russians and from the Baltics. You'll find more info on www.finnair.com. Click "About us" and then "Investors", but I don't think you have that detailed info on c/f on specific routes though.

And AY-MD11, maybe. There is a work group (called Jet100 if I remember correctly) looking in to this very thing. I think we would see those new jets on routes not previously served by ATRs as well.

Aero is due to have it's first flight in their own livery this Sunday (31MAR). Posters around HEL and TLL, now you know what you and your camera will be doing on Sunday! I posted more info about this in a separate posting.
