Flying Commercial In Oz- Has It Changed?

Wed Mar 27, 2002 10:52 pm

This question is for anyone who has flown in Australia since the fallout of the Ansett Tesna deal, and has flown in Oz before Ansett collapsed in Sept 2001.

Do you feel that flying, as an experience, has changed much since the Tesna deal fell through? I mean, flights that you have taken a few times or more with QF {or others} {eg, 0600 flight SYD-MEL etc} and that you had become accustomed to- the aircraft, flight crew, temperature and weather etc, have they remained the same when AN was flying, or has the "feeling" or "atmosphere" of those flights changed at all?

I sometimes feel that the whole atmosphere of civil scheduled flights has remained somewhat the same, but sometimes I feel there is a new element in the atmosphere that I can't quite put my finger on.

I think I know what you mean. My recent flights have been on QF, in business and economy, between Perth and Sydney. Not much has changed (except for the boxed food in Y which actually wasn't too bad). Some crews have been great, some indifferent. I think what's missing is the knowledge that Ansett isn't there. I've always found QF to be very professional and businesslike, where Ansett was I guess more personal, but it could vary between crews. It's probably just a feeling at the back of your mind that, whether it's good or bad, (and I think QF is quite good), this is all there is now. (I don't personally rate Virgin Blue as a business option, especially on longer flights).

Not quite. More like the original Compass food. Fresh rolls, OJ or water in bottles instead of unopenable plastic cartons, etc. for snacks, gourmet sandwiches, cake, etc.
