Indian Airlines To Acquire New Aircrafts?

Thu Mar 28, 2002 12:01 am

Just got this from Rediff's site:

http://www.rediff.com/money/2002/mar/27ia.htm

Goes like this...
------------------------------------------------
IA to acquire 43 aircraft for Rs 101 bn
Indian Airlines on Wednesday approved a proposal to acquire 43 aircraft comprising Airbus A-319, A-320 and A-321 at a staggering cost of Rs 100.89 billion.

This was cleared by the IA board of directors after considering a report of the sub-committee set up by it to go into the matter, an official release said.

A report is being sent by the IA board to the civil aviation ministry seeking clearance of the proposal for purchase of the new aircraft.

The Board sub-committee had recommended acquisition of 43 Airbus with various sitting capacity ranging from 122 to 172 to meet the fleet requirements of the airlines from 2003/04 to 2007/08.

The sub-committee while accepting the report of the Aircraft Evaluation Committee recommended that the report may be sent to the civil aviation ministry with a request to send copies of and all the background papers to the office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India and the Central Vigilance Commission.

IC wants to buy A320 family since 1999. And they never order it.

With the black cloud of beauracracy looming over the Indian Aviation Industry, I will not be surprised if it takes ten more years for this deal to be finalised... Sad

Actaully, the Parliamentary Board, and the Ministries of Civil Aviation had been sitting on the head of the Finance Ministry to get the damn thing passed. The Finance Ministry passed it last month. so the project looks hopeful.

See my previous detailed post on this issue.

I hope the Indian government will allow IC competitors to buy what they want and not what the government deems appropriate.

surely if they operate the A300 with approximately 250 seats, they would require at least some aircraft with that capacity. They have the A310 and A300 which have large seating capacities.
Are they changing their strategy, focusing on improving their product and hoping to attract more business passangers? Or is it just the fact that there is no real replacement for the A300? the A330 would fit in very nicely i think. Im sure they guys at IC know to some extent what they are doing (if thats possible).
good luck to them

When IC first bought the A300 for its trunk routes, they were the only game in town. So they could operate 3-4 A300s on the Bom-Del route, sell out and sit back. Now the market characteristics are very different. Four airlines fly the Bom-Del trunk route with close to 25 daily services competing on factors like frequency. So, for IC to compete effectively they have to operate close to hourly operations on that sector instead of a few large widebodies in the early AM and rush hour PM flights. Thus, the A319, A320 and 321 make perfect sense. You can interchange each as market conditions demand. For example - For rush hour flights a 185 seat A321 makes sense, for the lunch hour, hte A319 is better, etc etc etc. Also, since their international strategy is to operate out of secondary airports to the Gulf and SE Asia, flying an A320 twice weekly is optimal on some routes rather than a large A330 that could probably not even fly out of small airports.

Just read that the 43 A32X family aircraft will have CFM56 engines. I have serious doubts about this though.

IC operates 32 A320's with V2500's. It would be stupid to operate half the fleet with one type of engine and half witht the competing brand of engine!

The A320 and the A300B4 are operated DAILY to airports in SE Asia such as Bangkok and Singapore.

And it is not easy to get seats on the minute A320!

wrt the A300's, its true that IC is going to find it even more difficult to fill them on domestic flights, what with 2 more carriers scheduled to take to the skies next month(May-North Star and Royal Airways) both with 737NG eqpt.

But the A300s are being used successfully on intl runs to SIN and the mIddle east where they go out full. Ad there are still some domestic routes where IC has a hold and A300's may be justified.

While the freq. issue may be justified, the fact remains that slots at major airports (esp. BOM) are getting to be a problem. It is here that the A300's come in.

Instead of 3 A320's departing at 18:15, 18:30 and 19:00 they can put an A300 on the 18:00 run and a 320 on the 19:00 with the same capacity. The extra slot freed can then be used for other flights.

But the A32X family offers unrivalled fleet commonality advantages, so i guess that wns out for now.

Indianguy,

When Lufthansa purchased A321 they switch engines from CFM to IAE2500.
If the fleet is large enough, it could make sense or it could be used to get a bargain from IAE.

I guess it is still too early to speculate till Airbus gets the firm contract...but still this time i think it will be for real (IA acquiring new a/cs).

Further there is no mention of the split of numbers between 319, 320 and 321...and will Airbus again go out of its way to provide double bogie MLG for these aircrafts...well can only keep guessing. still will love to see the new aircrafts.

Cheers

the article in the Economic Times also mentioned that Airbus had offered a *spectacular* buyback deal under which Airbus would pay IC for the 11 737-200's and 7 A300B4's which are being sold off! IC inturn could sell the aircraft off.

After that IC would still have 6 A300's left!
