How Far Can This Plane Go?

Thu Mar 28, 2002 12:00 pm

I'm not too familiar with the "foreign" airliners, so when I saw this photo on a.net, it surprised me. Is this plane a widebody? And I guess it operated from JFK to the Ukraine. It seems really weird to have the engines on the fuselage (i.e. MD80) such as this plane to make transatlantics. Any info is greatly appreciated!

Kids! Bah!

Seriously though. The IL-62 is a narrow body from the first generation of jets transports. It has rather short range by todays standards. JFK to Kiev is, at best a one stop flight, more likely 2 stops required.
It is one of the classic beauties of the airliner world though.

BTW, it is not "the" Ukraine. That is a river. The country is simply Ukraine.

Take a look at this VC10 pic - notice any similarities - the Russians 'borrowed' the design off Vickers.

BA used to have loads of VC10s.

Interior shot shows 3-3 narrowbody on VC10.

How was the VC-10's range compared to the 707-320 and today's widebodies like the 767?

Apparently, the VC-10 had enough range to be used on transatlantic routes, because I keep seeing BA VC-10s in old pics in places like YUL(Montreal - Dorval) and perhaps JFK. Not to mention airlines like Ghana Airways which flew VC-10s to LHR.

Air Ukraine did and I think still does flights from Kiev and Lvov Ukraine to Toronto (YYZ) on the IL-62 non-stop.

From the archives of airliners.net:

Performance

Il-62 - Cruising speed 820 to 900km/h (440kt to 485kt). Range with max payload and reserves 6700km (3610nm), range with 10 tonne (22,045lb) payload 9200km (4965nm). Il-62M - Speeds same. Range with max payload 7800km (4210nm), range with 10 tonne (22,045lb) payload 10,000km (5400nm).

Therefore with a 10 tonne payload JFK to Kiev should be achievable in the IL62. In the 62M it could be reached on full payload.
