KLM Order 8 772ER, 3 744ERF And A332!

Thu Mar 28, 2002 10:02 pm

Guys,

Great news for Boeing, and Airbus as well  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

From KLM Website:

AMSTELVEEN, March 28, 2002 - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced today that the company intends replacing the Boeing 747-300, MD-11 and Boeing 767 aircraft types currently operated in its intercontinental fleet with two new types, the Boeing 777-200 and the Airbus A330-200. KLM’s current 747-300F freighter aircraft will be replaced with Boeing 747-400 Freighters.

This replacement program will improve the cost efficiency and competitiveness of the KLM fleet as the new aircraft will have lower unit costs and superior operating characteristics within KLM’s network. The new aircraft are expected to reduce environmental impact, increase customer appreciation and enhance flexibility in the network. Furthermore, the aircraft are being purchased at a time when the market for aircraft purchase is very favorable.

The fleet replacement, about which KLM has been negotiating with the two airplane manufacturers, engine manufacturers and several lease companies since August 2001, is planned to take place in two phases.

During the first phase, KLM will replace the twelve Boeing 747-300 aircraft currently operated, with eight Boeing 777-200ER (Extended Range) aircraft and three Boeing 747-400ERF (Extended Range Freighter) freighters. The first Boeing 777-200ER aircraft will be delivered late 2003. The last Boeing 747-300 will be phased out before 2005. KLM is currently still negotiating with various parties on its choice of engines for the new aircraft.

For the second phase, KLM is negotiating the replacement of its ten MD-11s and twelve Boeing 767-300ERs with a combination of A330-200’s and additional Boeing 777-200ER airplanes.

On completion of the fleet replacement program, KLM will have reduced the number of aircraft types in its intercontinental fleet from four to three, comprising the Boeing 747-400 (in all-passenger, combi and freighter configurations); the Boeing 777-200ER; and the Airbus A330-200.

The KLM Board of Managing Directors will be making further announcements on the fleet renewal at the May 8, 2002, press conference presenting the company’s results for fiscal 2001/2002.

But it's pretty sad for the 763 fans, and the 743 fans out there :-(

I think that the B777 will look good in KLM colours, but is their livery not a bit ageing?

Hi!

It's good to know that KLM is stepping up to their future. In one way I understand quite well the introdution of the 777 in their fleet, but the A330-200 for me is like send an arrow in Africa. I like very much Airbus and their airliners but for me it would be much more intentional for KLM to buy perhaps the 767-400 than the A330-200, they have an all Boeing fleet and I'm sure it will be easier for them to certify as pilot from the 737NG untill the 747-400, now with the A330 in the middle that will be something interesting to see! But KLM was always very independent in their way to order airliners. I remember in the 50's when KLM had all Lockheed Constellation/Super Constellation fleet for medium/long haul services they ordered the DC-6 for South America routes, interesting no?

This is sure good news.
Can't wait to snap some shots of the A330 in KLM coulors.
Nice.
Can it be that they order the A330 because of that NW have done it, to get a good agreement on maintenance?
Or am I totally wrong?
When in doubt, flat out!

They probably got the A332 because it is the best aircraft in its class - 200-250 pax shorter intercontental flights. KLM does not appear to be alone in preferring it over the 767-400. The A332 also carries a lot of cargo for its size, which no doubt is very important to KLM.

With both the 772ER and A332, they will have more flexibility for their routes, which is a good thing.

I Can't Find The A332 Info

Fri Mar 29, 2002 1:13 am

I see the article attached showing the A332's being part of the plan, but I cannot find it anywhere else including Airbus' site. Is this actually true? The web is strangely silent to the A332 buy.

The order for the 777s and 744 Freighters is definite, the 743s will be replaced.

The additional order, Phase Two, for more 777s and A332s to replace the MD11/763 is something that is yet to come and still to be negotiated. Sometimes the Dutch Media overstates the facts. I do not think any A332s have yet been ordered, that is why Airbus has nothing to announce.

When did KLM get two extra 763s, I thought they had 10 and and the article says 12.

I agree with Dutchjet. The intial phase of the this order has begun which means that the 777-200ERs an 747-400ERFs have been ordered. Phase two which calls for the ordering of A330-200s and/or additional 777-200ERs has not come yet.

This news is good for both manufacturers and especially the 747 line. I wonder though if we will see Airbus's in KLM's colors or not. Seeing that that part of fleet renewal process is still "up in the air".

Is this in addition to the KLM order for 772s, 744Fs, and A332s being discussed in an earlier thread on this same page?  Innocent

Doesn't anyone look at existing threads before starting a new one?????

747Fs,777s and A330. Strange Mix. Totally different cockpits make it impossible to interchange pilots. The 777 is odd here. The A340 would more sense together with the A330.

KLM might be using the threat of an A330 order as a way to get a better deal from Boeing. Plenty of airlines have done the same thing in the past.

I am sure that at this moment, Airbus is doing everything possible to make sure that Phase 2 includes at least some A332s in the mix. On the other hand, Boeing will do everything in its power to convince that the A332 is not necessary, additional 772s (and maybe some 773s) would provide a flexible fleet to cover KL's long haul routes. KL is certainly "using" this announcement to make sure that they get the best possible price for the Phase 2 aircraft. I think it could either way at this point.

What about the possible use of the 777-200 as a competitor against the A330-200? This way, KLM would operate the same aircraft but have two different flavors? Same cockpit, crews, engines and interoperability?
