Air Transat's Fate In Jeopardy

Fri Mar 29, 2002 10:56 pm

Rumour has it that an investigation report is imminent on the dramatic "ran-out-of-the-last-drop-of-fuel" flight on the A330 across the Atlantic and landed on Terceira, The Azores a few months back on C-GITS.

***

Statement from Air Transat
MONTREAL, March 28 /CNW/
Air Transat announces that Capt. Robert Piché is on short-term disability leave (medical leave) and has been withdrawn from active service since the end of February. The Company is making all its support programs available to Capt. Piché. This personal information is being released by the Company with
Capt. Piché's consent in advance of media reports to this end. Air Transat strongly deplores being forced into releasing personal information concerning its employees and requests that the media afford the necessary respect to Capt. Piché's legitimate right to privacy.

I wish Air Transat the best of luck. The Canadian aviation industry cannot afford to loose another airline. Everytime there is a article on them the press is very hard on them which has a impact on its investors and passengers. They have 185 million dollars to hold themselves strong and I hope they do. I hope that they do whatever it takes to keep flying. The worst thing that can happen is to see another Canadian Airline dissappear.

I forgot to mention that I hope its nothing serious with the health of that captain in question. Hope he recovers quickly and resumes flying again.

While the article itself has nothing to do with the fate of Air Transat, one has to wonder how they could still be losing so much money (another $17 million last quarter) while their only remaining charter competitor (Skyservice) is raking in the dough? I was talking with a travel agent the other day about taking a last minute trip to the DR. When I tried to get on a Skyservice flight (with any of the SSV tour operators), I was told there was nothing left, but there was still a fair amount of space available on AT. I decided to wait a while instead, but not because of AT, I just wanted to see if the prices would drop some more later in April.

Ok...let me try and explain it....the title and the media release are in no-way related. However, there's high speculation that an investigation report is immiment anytime and the worst is to see TC completely shutting down Air Transat. It's a wait and see situation. Hope this helps.

Cessnapimip, that's the rumour in the Canadian aviation....they were fined a mere $250,000 for faulty maintenance on C-GITS, another multi-million dollar class lawsuit by the pax....TC would have something to announce....at least, that's what I've heard.

Thank you for elaborating, I see what you mean now. As far as the investigation goes, I can see Transport Canada throwing out some more penalties to them however I cannot see them shutting them down completely. That is a very drastic move and in the end nobody wins, atleast in my opinion.

Sky, I agree with you. FYI, Transat has had a bad track of maintenance records in the TC files for yrs. Not sure how this will play out this time. I personally would never fly with Transat. I'm too young for that, lol~ Maybe I should have written, "Air Transat's fate in thin waters".

Shutting TS down is too harsh. The Azores incident, while bad, did not result in a single fatality. More penalties (whether fines or operating restrictions) are possible.

Is TS still ETOPS-restricted by the way?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

YYZ717, I'm not sure. My guess is probably "yes". Since that incident, they routed their flights to LIS/OPO more the the north (via YYR/KEF/SFJ/SNN/DUB) to stay within 60 mins with 1 engine out with the A330. To my knowledege, they haven't changed type to L-1011 on that route.

I think that the TS 330 still have to go polar or atleast to greenland.....they are using the L's to fly across the pond.....remember the L that took sooooo much rwy last week Neil......that had to be going across....or just a lot of fat people were going to vegas???

I hope that there is a source to back this information up....anyone??
