They's be crazy not to buy the 777, it's perfect for them. As usual, they'll be left with a big gap between the 767 and 747. I remember chatting to a Flight Engineer in the cockpit of a 747 over Aus and he was lamenting the fact that Qantas had never bought the Tristar, and instead operated an all-747 fleet, including heavily loss-making sectors such as Brisbane - Port Morseby, Sydney - Wellington, Darwin - Singapore. He said a 300-seater would have fitted in perfectly and even though they've just made this enormous profit (which shows they obviously know what they're doing and don't need to take advice from the likes of me), I still think that is the case and should get off their corporate arse and roll the potato for once, and buy some 777s, which would also look amazing in the Qantas livery.
