Air Transat Next Week On NBC

Sat Mar 30, 2002 3:23 pm

For those of you in North America.

NBC Dateline will dedicate their April 2 broadcast to the Air Transat mishap over the Atlantic.  Smile

Here's the announcement from NBC:

TUESDAY, APRIL 2 - 10:00 PM ET
On a wing and a prayer
A routine flight suddenly becomes an emergency unlike any seen before--miles out to sea, their jumbo jet glides with no power and no place to land. Then, something happens that makes aviation history.

Yeah I saw that, but what exactly is "something happens that makes aviation history"?

Me too...

Knowing how the media screws up, and how Dateline overdramatizes, this should be a very "entertaining" segment.  Insane

C'mon...
You guys have to admit that an event like an airliner running out of gas in the middle of the atlantic and happens to be able to a patch of islands is quite remarkable.

Once again the media err by calling it a "jumbo" jet, which is a 747, instead of a widebody. Wasn't it an A330?

Jumbo jet can be used loosly. Many people associate "heavies" as jumbo jets. In my mind, a jumbo jet is a 747, but again, it's used loosly.

This should be very interesting to watch though!

Judging by the ad they showed, it looked like a twin-jet; possibly a 767.
But then again, those aren't normally allowed out to sea.

Btw...the "prayer" word might be a clue. Could be another overdramatized
NBC story about how a jesus freak saved the day by praying.

B808/A400 - What do you mean 767's aren't usually allowed out to sea? The routinely fly transatlantic routes.

A330-200.

Aren't 767's the airliner most used on trans-atlantic flights?

to you that it is a airbus330 .. now the question is
is an airbus 330 is consider a Jumbo Jet... It's quite a big plane... no?

B808/A400...

An A330 IS a twin jet and B767s are flying across the drink as we speak.

Should be an interesting program. Wonder what angle they'll take with the pilot. He did a remarkable job landing it but also dumped the fuel, though I don't think it was a blatant mistake.

We'll see.

I personally think that running out of fuel should have never happened. From my understanding, Capt Robert Piche thought it was a fuel imbalance, shut off one of the engine valves and tried to cross-feed to the other engine. What he didn't realize (till the last min.) was that the engine was actually malfunctioning and all that was transferred ended up over the water as dumped fuel. It was engine fuel leak.

Therefore I don't see him as a hero. I see him as an idiot, who, in a desperate/panic mode, landed the plane safely without power, flight controls and fuel. The PIC (and maintenance) together have to ensure flight is carried out safely. Well, they didn't. They made the pax go bananas, like a ride to hell.  Wow!

Ooops, my bad. The twins are allowed over the Atlantic, since they
can satisfy ETOPs rules there.

Btw, NBC used stock footage or something, and the ad I saw had a
Continental 767 (or 777).

I don't think the program would tell us any more than we already knew, cuz the investigation reports haven't been released yet. It's just another selling point for the TV station to get more audience. But we'll see.

CBC had a good documentary about this last fall. Maybe this NBC one will be a re-broadcast of the CBC one, if not their own production.

If it's an American production, watch for a million inaccurate facts about Canada and/or Portugal and/or Air Transat and/or the Azores and/or the A332. etc. etc. in typical American fashion about foreign events.

haha

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Is Captain Piche an idiot like CX829 said in this feed?
I wonder really maybe the act that you describe is not very intelligent but to land this huge aircraft after gliding Im sorry but it is still a remarkable act and to do so is a proof of stable and good nerve... knowing as much as captain can know about airplane .. my gosh he remained calm (I guess and hope hehe) and he glide all the way down to ground  Smile/happy/getting dizzy hehe

come on people let's all see how american will describe this lovely event  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

...so, if you are a passenger staring aimlessly out the window on this ScareBUS and suddenly notice fuel streaming from an engine...DAH!?!

Maybe it was more important to read-up on Air Transat's latest merchandise available in their magazine. You know, the latest in fashionably coloured life vests, etc.?

I hate Dateline, when they tried to do a Post 9/11 story about UA 62 (the one that got crashed intentionaly) they used stock footage from
- A landing AA MD-80
- The inside of a UA CRJ
I hate Paula Jones too, she probably thinks AirTransat is based in Tupelo, MS.  Nuts

"...it was a foreseeable accident," says the pussy-whiney-boy.

Take it from this lawyer, PWB is quoting from his lawyer.

Quick, how many of you (who are not lawyers) use the word, "foreseeable" in the ordinary course of conversation.

I can't foresee using "foreseeable" in the foreseeable future.

Not that bad of program...of course I had to see right away whether I could do the same with the flight sim while watching. No sweat!! Of couse "pussy-whiney-boy" was not in my living room.

Last I checked, the Azores were in the mid-atlantic, not north atlantic which was repeated over-and-over...melodrama for sure.

Overall I thought it was one of their better efforts. Usually they do a ½ ass job on a story.

All I can say is I really didn't care for that guy (aka pussy whiney boy), and that woman annoyed me just as much.
I also couldn't stand how they had to always say "terror," ....isn't that the overused word these days

The part out the lawyers was rediculous, also the part about the passengers second guessing the captain....come on!!!
Or the woman scolding the Air Transat maintenance guys....ok...

This was about what I expected from Dateline....would've been much better if it was made by the Discovery Channel or the likes.

I would have liked to have heard more of the technical aspects and how the investigation if proceeding, and less of the drama.
it was pretty informing though, and I feel like it made people aware of the seriousness of the accident, it didn't really get much press here in the states.
I tried to cut some slack to Whiney Pussy Boy and weird lady...........I figured they were just Canadian  Smile

Well I would have love them to talk more about the background of the pilot  Smile/happy/getting dizzy over here, (in canada  Smile/happy/getting dizzy after 48h of this news they talk about his background)guess the americain didn't like too much to talk about how this canadian really saved 300 persons... sorry but with the amazing terror of dateline I now understand how heroic this pilot is.... hope the reporter could stop saying : "more terror when we come back.." it's just too much like cnn ... "Now back on War against Terrorist" and over here it's now making us smiley each time they say that... ok we know it.. it's terror...

It's looking like they want to put in the mind of their listener (I dunno what is the majority of their audience from) but for me I feel sad to see how much time they say terror..and instead of focusing on the technical aspect of the gliding and turning in circle to slowly go down.. or what-ever how people went to thank the pilot... they focus on how maybe some guy did this or this that wrongly...

Anyway still fun to see all of your reactions over here
 Smile/happy/getting dizzy

peace,

Mainstream American media shouldnt ever do any "investigative" story having to do with aviation because its clear that they never consult anyone who knows anything about aviation! What a pile of trash this show was, it was more or less what we can expect from the 2 hour made-4-TV movie of this event that we will undoubtedly see soon!

They mixed footage of Air Transat A320s and A330s taking off (numerous times) shots of narrowbody BOEING cabins with shots of widebody cabins and there must have been a total of only 10 different animations that they ran backwards and frontwards, fast and slow about 100 times before the hour was up. The a/c in their animation (suppose to be an A330) but it didnt have the Rolls Royce engines..........I suppose I could go on.

The best part of it was the reported cause (mismatched parts connecting a fuel line) was mentioned only once and never refered to again. I suppose the point here was more human interest than anything else. And they never once explored the capability of the A330 to glide SO far for SO long which I find to be remarkable- I wonder if other commercial airliners could do it?

With all the talk of how "heroic" the captain was it was interesting to then hear that he is on short term medical leave from Air Transat at the moment......I wonder if that is like "administrative leave" which basically means, you are just in the prolonged process of being fired!
