DL 727's?

Sun Mar 31, 2002 1:30 am

When is delta planning on retiring their 727's? I was looking at the ATL-DEN flights for next January and they have a 727 on flight 268 for next year. I thogh for sure they would be retired by then. Anyone know when they will be retired?

Delta will be the last major US airline (excluding freight haulers) to phase out the 727. The plan originally was to retire the last one in 2005 but that deadline has been moved to end 2003 after the crisis in air transport industry following the Sept 11 events.
Next year, Delta will still have 727's unlike American or United, but looking at the ATL-DEN schedule for next January, if you see that the aircraft is a 727 doesn't necessarily mean it will still be a 727 by then. In several months, schedules are likely to change depending on what is happening with the airlines so I wouldn't cound on that. If you want to book this flight just to fly on a 727 I wouldn't book now because I never know, they may switch the equipment from a 727 to a newer 757 or 737-800.
Five years ago I made a booking on United three months before flying. I was told by the agent on the phone that flying from DFW to LGA connecing in ORD both flights would be 727's. I was happy until a got a letter from United two weeks later telling me that my flights on which I was booked had changed, the equipment was changed from 2 727's to a 737 and a 757.

I still think Delta will have their 727s longer than Northwest. Yes, the equipment changes quite often though. I am looking at taking DL686 ATL-ORF in July, and since I started looking up fares, the equipment has been: 737-800 (Delta Shuttle config), 727, 757, 737-800 (mainline config) and is now back to a 727.

I'm very sad to see all the 727s go. It is one of the few rear-engined, original planes in the industry. Everything now is two-engined, wing-engined. Don't get me wrong, I love all the planes that are new, the 757 is my favorutie plane, but I'm gonna miss the 727 and its incredibly long runway use and the noise and all the originality that is the 727. I'm gonna be most sad to see Delta 727s go because they are my favourite 727. Anyway, I hope they keep the 727 long, but they won't.
