What To Do At EWR For 11 Hours?

Mon Apr 01, 2002 6:49 am

Since someone started this with Frankfurt. I am flying with NW from LAX-DTW-EWR on a redeye and arrive in EWR at about 8:30am. My CO flight to Frankfurt leaves in the evening. I'm probably going to be pretty beat considering I'm flying in on a red-eye. Should I just get a hotel or should I venture into NYC? How long does it take to get into NYC from EWR?

Check out CO's web site for information on the new rail connection between EWR and downtown NYC - its convenient, safe and not expensive. With the train, you are downtown in about 40 minutes.

All of the major hotel chains are around Newark airport.

Check out CO's new terminal, its quite nice, but 11 hours is a long time, I would get some sleep.

Figure 30-40 minutes by train to Manhattan, if you are going to go there make sure you know where your going ahead of time.

NJ Transit from EWR to Penn Station Manhattan is about $11 one way, however if you have a few extra bucks I would recommend taking Amtrak from EWR to NY Penn (at least on the way into Manhattan). The reason is that you will be arriving at the peak of rush hour, finding a seat on a NJ Transit commuter train during rush hour is almost impossible.

It costs $20 on Amtrak one way but it's way more comforable (like First class airline seats) and you will be able to grab a seat and possibly a a bite to eat in the cafe car on the way.

My advice if your heading to Manhattan is to take Amtrak in and NJ Transit back, cost is about $31 dollars rt.

Here's EWR's rail schedules including Amtrak and NJ Transit .

You can also take a free shuttle bus from Airtrain station E to the nearby Jersey Gardens outlet mall.

There are many wonderful museums in the area:

In Newark, there's the Newark Museum (art, natural history)
In New York, there are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, Gugenheim Museum, to name just a few in Manhattan.

Any of these are worth a visit! Have a great trip, and welcome to the area!

Thanks everyone.
I am still debating on what to do. My hotel room would be free of charge. As much as I travel, I rarely come into the New York area so I really would love to go into the city. Last time I was there was when I was 10. Ater my redeye from LAX via DTW, I have the day in the NYC area, than another overnight flight to Frankfurt, then a 8 hour train ride into Austria, and then an hour bus ride. Pretty exhausting, but that is what comes along with reward travel.

Best thing to do is to get some Zzz's and on the way across the pound figure out when you can come back to NY and spend at least a week and lots of $$$$$ Smile
