Was Baghdad Airport Ever Used As A Stopover Point?

Mon Apr 01, 2002 10:41 am

Before the advent of 744's, A340's e.t.c.....aircraft flying between Asia and Europe would refuel in the middle east, e.g Bahrain, Abu Dhabi e.t.c....Was Baghdad Saddam Hussien Intl. ever used as such a stopover point?

Baec777, yes, it was nesecary. Many Europe-Asia flights could not be done non-stop as before the advent of the 747-400 and A340. However, it is my understanding that the most popular stopover for airlines going Europe-Asia (at least Japan) was Anchorage.

Just a peak at a 1976 OAG shows that only SAS DC-8s transited Baghdad...to Bangkok, Manila

Further south in Bahrain, British, Qantas, Singapore had flights east and west.

PIA, KLM, Sabena, British and others made an intermediate stop at Dubai on certain routings.

Baghdad's airport is named Saddam Hussein Intl? Aren't there any important people over there besides him?

I realize that this means going back a ways but I flew on a BOAC flight from LHR to BOM in Jan of 1961 on a Comet 4C that would have stopped in Baghdad but because of fog we diverted to Basra, Iraq. The flight was London, Frankfurt, Cairo, Baghdad, Bombay.

Don't think any carriers transited Baghdad from the late '70' onwards.

I know JAL used to have a NRT-ATH DC-10 milkrun service (it stopped everywhere and was the slowest way from NRT to ATH!) and Baghdad may have been a stop at one time, but I'm not 100% sure.
