Sun Country 27's Question.

Tue Apr 02, 2002 5:11 am

Last night while working the ramp for AirTrans flight 430
the scheduled Sunday, Sun Country arrival from
MSP to PNS pulled in; I observed the mighty 727's engines and quickly noticed they were not the original
JT8D-11 powerplants that were installed on 27's but rather looked like the slightly more powerful
MD-81/82/83/88 JT8D-209 engines can anyone comfirm this observation, also, didnt look the engine number two in the back is being used not sure however, engine cowling didnt look dirty and such from use.

It's a Valsan conversion, which, as you noted, uses the -209's in the #1 and #3 positions. This and some additional baffling for the #2 engine (as well as being able to operate it at reduced power) reduces overall noise as well as improves fuel economy.

Pan Am, I understand, has at least a couple of Valsan's with the winglet ('Quietwing') conversions as well.

I'd be interested in the economy differences between stock 727, Valsan, Tay, and combinations with Quietwing.
